box for shipping?

Anyone know a source for boxes for shipping small 1 gal potted trees?

i make mine with whatever cardboard box left over from this and that.

What Pete said!  Also be sure you put sticks to support the sides and foam and seran taped over the dirt to prevent the dirt from dumping out during transit.  Not easy to ship 1 gallon cuttings.  That's why they get the big bucks!

U-Line has 8"x8" boxes that work well.  The 20" long size was half off so I bought those.  Easily lets you put a 1 gal pot at each end.

Is shipping bare root not recommended?

Do you tape the large pot so it doesn't slide around, or is there a better way to hold it in place?

I learned a good way to use the  free, USPS triangle tubes.  I've used them for plants in cups and bareroot, or bagged roots with soil.  You lay the plant and cup or bagged roots (wrapped in paper and plastic) on the unfolded box and poke a hole on each side of the plant, then thread a twisty  or string through the holes and tie the plant to the box so it doesnt shift and slide around. Do that in a few places. Then fold up the box and put tape over the exposed twist tie or string, so it doesnt get snagged in transit.  I dont know if the box will accomodate a gallon pot, but should fit the roots and soil in a bag.  Shipping has been between aprox $5 and $7  If you print the postage shipping lable at home you will save about $1

USPS  sml  tube   L-25”  h-6”   w-6”  g-19”    both ssize triangle tubes ship for the same price (what ever the weight is)

USPS  med tube  L-38”   h-4”  w-6”  g-17”

Little tip learned from another member
In addition to the sticks and or tape, use screws through the cardboard into the sides of the pot to help secure it

tape and stick is pain. i'm very grateful that i have received so many rooted cuttings and air layers, but taking those tape off is not fun. i just tie the pot to the bottom of the box so it doesn't move around in the box. so far i haven't heard any specific issues. no tape on my trees.

OMG I shudder to think how I packed the first plants I sent out.  UGH cobwebs of tape inside the box.  I truly apologize to my victims who might have been JamesWyllie, ADelmonto, JWarren93,  I'm sorry guys.  Now I have it down to a science, so don't be afraid of me sending plants to you .

Exactly right.  It also helps avoid the cardboard getting damp and weakened.  I've been giving lessons on this to another member here. :)

That is how I received my Raintree order:
