Brand new "Figgie"

Hello All,

I have been bitten by the "Fig Bug" with a vengeance.  I am at the "just bought 3 that I hope will grow here" phase and am so very tempted by all the other varieties I find by F4F members on ebay.  I would LOVE to find a Fig Sensei in my area (Pacific Northwest, but will happily absorb wisdom from anywhere!) - I live in Knappa, Oregon, which is about 15 miles East of Astoria.  We are usually about 10 degrees warmer than the coast and, while not affected by the Marine Layer, it does tend to be quite damp here.  We frequently get days even into the 80's through September and don't get too many frozen days ('cept this year!).

     Nice to meet you!

Welcome!  I recently moved from the Roseburg area.  There are several people near Seattle and they have it worse than you, weather-wise.  Best of luck!  How did you taste your first fig?

Thanks Bob,

About 15 years ago I tasted my first "not-in-a-Newton" dried fig and I was in heaven.  Being big into Heirloom Gardening, I know that my first taste of a commercial fig was most likely light years from what a fresh fig's taste.  I know I've had a fresh fig (which I LOVED) but my CRS is kicking in right now, so I can't remember when, where or what it was.  I'm excited about trying anything that will grow here.

    :-) Elsa

Welcome, Elsa. Nice to meet you.

CRS! My mom says that ALL the time! First couple of times I cocked my head "huh? What's CRS?"

I think thats too funny.

Welcome from a fellow newbie :)

Hi Elsa, welcome to the forum ;)

Hi Elsa and welcome to the forum.
you mention it gets quite damp at your location .
Figs with a tight eye would be the ticket.

Welcome.

Welcome to the forum Elsa

Welcome from another newbie trying to resist. And loosing

welcome.

Welcome Elsa, nice to have you onboard!

I got lots of varieties to fruit at least a little bit while I was there but most of them were very young.  You wont have any problem with short or medium season figs and if you have a grow room or green house you can get anything to fruit.

Welcome Elsa

Aloha and welcome, Elsa!  Wait a minute...there was a new figgie by the name of Anna.  Elsa, Anna?  Anyone seen "Frozen"?  Hey, I have a 9 year old.  Just thought that was a weird coincidence :)  Anyways, warm hugs all around.

Nate

Welcome to the forum

Hi Oregonrain,
Welcome to the figworld !
Which strains did you buy ?

Welcome to the forum.  Great place for us newbies to learn a lot.

Welcome

Welcome Elsa, from Southern California.  It's pretty drippy where you are.  But figs don't care!  Enjoy the forum.  I look forward to your questions and photos.

Suzi

WOW!  What an awesome welcome!  Thank you!  :-)

The three figs I recently bought (but haven't decided exactly where they're going to go yet) are a Negronne, another black variety and a BT.  I plan on getting as many more as possible.  :-D

I am putting in two greenhouses, one is a little one for the tomatoes and the other will be a 14' X 24'.  I'm hoping to be able to grow outdoors for the most part.  I would imagine that the growing part is easy - the ripening of fruit is the hard part.  :-)

Any suggestions on varieties I should try?

Yes, Nate, I've seen Frozen (many times now!).  I'm just sooooo glad there's finally an Elsa that isn't a villain (thanks Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade!!).

You know what happens when you get advanced CRS?  It becomes "CRAFT".  I will change the definition to be appropriate and polite here:  Can't Remember A Figging Thing.  :-)

I think you need Desert King.  It only has one crop.  No breba (awful tasting first crop which you will have to BBQ anyway), but it's main crop is awesome and It loves cool weather.

Suzi

Suzi, I thought that Desert King ONLY gets brebas to ripen without the wasp and sets main and holds it with the wasp.
