Breadth of varieties

These are just temp pix. I'll get them cleaned up and labeled one of these days. The smallest was White Ischia and the largest 143-36.

Varieties?
Aah, they will come in time if frosty does not show up before that.
But for now just one variety will do. I got it this evening at "Price Chopper" for $6. At another premium grocery store, each one piece was for $1.69. So I could not resist the $6 for bakers-dozen+. I have full intention to share if any one in the family finds them out in the fridge but I am having one every hour on the hour and may not lost very long.

I saw a box of the same variety of figs for sale at my local supermarket.

I bought two figs. One was not ripe and was dry. The other was very sweet and juicy.

I hope to see them in the store again while I wait for my figs to ripen.

Jon--

There's often a white ring in your photos, presumable for scale. What is it, and what's the diameter?

1 inch.

The two figs in your hand looks mighty good.
Some day soon I may have more than one ripened fig at a time (some day...).  Figs on my SAL (EL) rooted in 1st Qtr 2008 look good here.

OttawanZ5--

Yes, they were good while they lasted. For a while I was getting a couple dozen or so ripe ones per day, but have recently had souring problems and most of the ripe figs ended up as compost--along with buckets of apples from one tree that just didn't deliver the taste I'd hoped for. Hopefully, you'll have better luck as your fig tree matures!

It's a battle though; it seems there's always something. I hadn't had problems with critters eating the leaves or bark of my figs, so when leaves appeared on a recent cutting, I figured it would be safe outside in dappled shade. Sure enough, when I checked it the next day, a rabbit or pack rat had chewed off the tip. I snipped it off at the next node, so hopefully it'll try again.

Whenever I bring out newly rooted fig cuttings (mostly in 1-litre clear pots), I bury the pot close to the rim in ground in an area with dappled shade and then place a 2-litre pop bottle over it (with the bottle bottom cut off). I pass a skinny stick through the bottle top opening to keep the bottle in place over the new plant. It provides humidity and protection.

Sounds like a good solution. I rigged my newly-shortened cutting with a plastic bag "tent" supported by four sticks, but your way sounds simpler and more protective.

Been eating these for the last week $3.99 a box get around 15-16 worth every penny.

By far the best figs I ever Bought in Canada. Definately a variety I want to get.

I agree Nelson but they add $1.50 extra to the same package for the extra distance to Ottawa. Still enjoyable.

Damn I thought it would be cheaper in the Capital need to talk to Mr Harper. But ill tell you one thing even at that price I would still buy them and be happy they are just so tasty.

Jon:I would say,the 143-36,is the forth.fig on the top row.
I would also like to say, that this fig :143-36,is trying hard to,impress me here in NJ too.
So far so good,it spent the winter in ground and came out, only with medium damage,to about half Canopy, and now it grew very strong,to about 5 foot in every direction, and it has a medium amount of fruits,of large size.
I think, they are enough developed to get ripe till frost.
The taste was also good enough last year for an young tree,so,I like it.
Also it resist rain very well.
This is also an Adriatic hybrid that wants to grow, unlike the Adriatic tree, from UCDAVIS.

Jon curious to the name of several small dark figs in the first picture when you get the time.

First row across last fig
Second row down second fig
Fifth row down third fig
Last row second fig

Herman, 143-36 is correct. It has been a slow grower here, but a heavy bearer, and fairly early this season. Also a large fig. Flavor is mild. Was better at Davis, but that might have been the result of caprification, there.

First row across last fig = Vista
Second row down second fig + I think one of the VdBs

Fifth row down third fig = smallest Negronne I ever saw
Last row second fig = I think Vista OL, which is larger than the regular Vista, usually.
