Breba 2014

While out raking up a massive amount of oak leaves to be re-purposed as mulch, I noticed the signs of Spring springing...in the form of breba (that I usually knock off).

Cannone Dark has a chance to produce more breba than any other tree I have witnessed here in 8B ever. I will keep only a couple. Given the uniqueness of the main crop in 2013, it will be interesting to see the size, texture, and taste of the breba. Fig Start Date 3/12 to see how quickly the breba ripen here. The attached images are all from the same L shaped tree (one whip limb and another major limb that is growing espalier-like).

Very nice JD. I'm having the same results in my greenhouse, but all the rest in my garage are still sound asleep.

Nice...we still have some left over snow

Hopefully they'll taste great.

I can't wait for your taste profile.

My LSU Gold has a decent amount of Brebas. Should I remove these?

Tami,
It should be a fun season. Meanwhile, if you have not already, click on the links (the fig names) and you can read what I wrote about the fruit(s) in 2013.

Charles,
Other than LSU Improved Celeste, the breba here usually drop or lack taste. My preference is to prepare for a good main crop by removing any breba. Then I give thanks whether or not I get a main crop because it is not promised and the weather can water down what might otherwise be a good harvest.

lovely high grade pictures, thank you.

What are you taking those pictures with? Like mentioned, they look great.

Nice pics! What camera did you use?

Thanks. The camera is a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H5. It has been and continues to be an excellent camera. Here are a few comprehensive reviews [1][2].

JD,
Since we've had no winter in SoCal I've a couple breba that should be ready to eat in a day or two...probably won't be that good but we will see. Many days the past month have been in the 80's. These are softening up and starting to droop. I can't find their tag so I don't know what they are.

"Since we've had no winter in SoCal..."   .... Indeed. In California, it's been hottest year in recorded history.  I have a few figs that never went dormant, and a couple others that for the past few months have lovely figs forming. Vernino is one - no wonder a synonym is Pasquale (Easter). Another is Bisirri Dark that has not skipped a beat.

And, yes, very nice photos. :)

Yep!  I can't tell what's main crop and what's breba on my Verte.  It never went dormant.

Suzi

And the darn mocking birds are at it again. There went my Sal's Corleone.

Sue, the only good mockingbird is a dead mockingbird. That dark fig looks great and I hope they taste good.

Charles, if your LSU Gold is large enough to support he breba and then a main crop I would leave them. I ate some off my tree last year and they were worth keeping. My tree is going on 5 years old.

"gene"

The figs are looking beautiful Sue. I am doing my best to patiently wait on winter to be over. It just keeps persisting for most of us. Even here in SW KY it's going to be in the twenties for the next three nights. I know it is "coming soon" though. Just not soon enough this year :-/ .

As for the Mocking Birds......there's room for all of God's creatures......on my plate right next to my mashed potatoes ;-) !

I kid of course. Too bad eating songbirds isn't legal in most states.

Now Dove, Quail, & Squirrel (also fig thieves) on the other hand.........

That's gotta hurt!

In addition to be warm, it's been so dry out here, I would expect with little else to eat, bird damage for all garden things is going to be bad this year.

and in NC it's starting off to another wet yr. hope things improve by the time summer rolls around. few breba on few trees. but for whatever reason, lot of them just dropped. VdB, Persian White, and 187-25 are few that's holding on to the breba. also noticed that the trees that didn't put on figs last yr are being little more productive and growing better.

Nice to see figs here a possible inch of snow .
C'mon spring.

Gene my tree is about five years old and ten feet tall I think it should support the brebas. I think I'll remove the small ones and give the others a shot.

@Darkman, let the fruits on the tree, except if you have a special pruning/fruiting technique to get more fruits that makes you want to drop the brebas.
Here I only drop the "funny" shaped or ugly ones .
The beautys are kept on till hopefully ripeness !

dang it. forgot to take pix again..
