My partner and I argue as to what 'free range chicken' really means... so, they go the run of the yard and I fence my plants. They do not like figs, but trip on them breaking young shoots, so, they too have to be fenced. The Berries are fenced, the garden is sectioned and fenced. I do let them in there, supervised, so they eat the bugs- mostly they scratch the wood chips of the paths, and when they jump in my beds, they are gone to be free somewhere else.
I have 2 Marionberries, but young (1 and 2 year old) very thorny. so I am figuring out how to manage them. I have also others in buckets, still deciding where would they be best (4 kinds of currants: black, red, white and yellow), salmon berry, longanberry, triple crown blackberry, and some other 'tay' (Meeker, perhaps, round, fat, juicy and delicious raspberries. they grow under my Cherry, plum and Fig trees.
Pears? Yes, I got them also all 2 year old. I will have a sample this year. A few put out flowers and have little pears on them. I have them planted 2 feet apart and on a 20degree incline. I will espalier them in my front yard. I have a few asian grafted onto Bartlet, and their shoots are doing very well. On the other side of my yard, I have 5 apple trees, which I am working on making them espalier about 2 feet from my fence with neighbors.
I also have several hardy kiwi in pots... Bluberries also. and over 2 dozen of exquisit tomatoes.
I am monitoring these fig trees closely. I want figs that ripe here in the North West.
I will have raspberry start to trade later on when they go dormant.
I feel sorry for people who do not have a garden or a yard or plants to tend... they are life fulfilling for me.
