Hi saw a Fig tree today  it was Labeled " Kadota  " but it was the brightest red fig I ever saw. it was Ruby Red with just a hint of black. It was soft and maybe a couple of days before it was fully ripe. another fig was starting to turn red also, so it wasn't just a single freak colored fig.

I have no idea what this one might be. Pretty sure it's a safe to say that it's NOT Kadota as labeled. Seems that most nurseries will slap any name on a fig tree just to try to sell it. 

Could be a good find though. If you have the option to purchase it, it might be fun to try it just to see what it actually turns out to be.

Ruby Red colored figs are not very common.

FYI, I obtained a black colored Kadota fig from a very reliable whoesale nursery.....Saxon Becnel and Sons. That was definitely not a mistake on the label of this fig tree as Saxon sold many of these trees in my area.....all with a yellow Kadota label on them and all producing some very nice black figs. I purchased one to give it a trial as the Becnel family have introduced some very good tasting heirloom figs into the retail trade. I certainly do know that it is not a true Kadota; however, it may turn out to be another excellent fig for my area.....because all of the figs that he sells are excellent cultivars. Time will tell.

Personally, I would buy that red Kadota for the fun of raising it. There is a slight chance that it may be a bud sport of yellow Kadota....who knows. Those things do happen. If it is, you've got something very unique.....Ruby Red Kadota!  Mine will be called Black Kadota.

I have seen Brown Turkeys be pretty close to that color on occasion.

I also have seen Brown Turkey and California Brown Turkey being close to the fig above in color.
Nice color anyone will like it but if it has a large cavity and an open eye intrance it is no good in many places in the US.
Check the eye and the interior cavity.

Wish I could open one and peek inside but I cant unless I buy it first.

You could tell the owner that you are very interested but want to taste test before you buy. That way you get to look inside as well. As you have said it is a bit pricey, so there is no reason for the owner not to let you take it for a test drive.

That certainly is cool looking fig. I like the idea of a taste test too, only seems fair. You can also check for an open or closed eye.

If the owner lets you......

Take a knife and try to cut right through the center of the fig's eye. That way you can see if it is open, or closed and whether or not the entrance to the eye tunnels into a possible interior cavity inside of the pulp. If a tunnel exists and is OPEN at the eye.....that is what the bugs will use to get inside of your fig. This will cause it to ferment and/or go sour. Many will live in there too if they can get inside.

It looks like those are in the ever-distinctive Monrovia pots.  If that's the case, I would be interested in contacting Monrovia and asking them what variety it is. 

They only list 6 varieties at their website:  http://www.monrovia.com/plant-catalog/search.php?query=fig

If it were to be any of those I would assume it's Blackjack as well.  Nurseries swap labels and sometimes suppliers get them wrong ... it happens.

I would go for it if only for the novelty of it, why not. Then you can sell cuttings to all of us fig freaks and recoup your cost.

If he sells black jack figs as well I would compare the two. My black jack turned all kinds of different colors while ripening. However, The eye is red from early on and I do not see any red color in your picture. Also, the leaves do not look like typical brown turkey figs. The leaves do resemble white Kadota in my opinion. I'd go in on some cuttings if you buy it.

 I don't mind the higher cost, I have thrown away much more of my money on sillier things.

Like Barry said, You can easily get your investment back right here by selling some cuttings.

i saw a picture of candy apple red fig on one of the site sometime ago. the site was not in english. but the picture side "Israel Red Fig". i think the site was from indonesia somewhere. the picture looked very similar to the one on this post. bright candied apply red.
