Brogiotto nero brebas

Hello!

My Brogiotto nero trees are loaded with brebas, it's strange, this cultivar should be unifere.
First years brebas are always fallen, last year the biggest plant have ripen two brebas, this year have a lot of fruits, that are big enough.

Very nice.......where are you located

Such a beautiful tree located in a wonderful setting. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Fico.
Very impressed, I have a Brogiotto Nero that hasn't ripened one fig yet,its about five years old.
Vito

Hi Deerhunter, i'm located in Sardinia.
Thanks Sbmohan.

Vito, your tree looks similar to mine? I'm not 100% sure with my plants because many trees are mislabeled. This tree was purchased as "Dottato".

Last year my parents
bought 2 trees, one as "Brogiotto nero" and one as "Lungo del Portogallo", but are neither one nor the other, are completely different from my Bn and LdP, and they are both of the same variety.

http://figblog.binhoster.com/brogiotto-nero/ .This author argues that the variety has 2 crops.

Of Course ,it can keep Breba in Sardinia ,but only the breba that are pollinated by the fig wasp.

Vito does yours not put out figs or put them out but not ripen?

You sent me a Brogiotto Cutting a couple of years ago and it is putting out several figs right now.

Hi Nick.
Yes mine puts figs on but they don't ripen in time, I think the season in zone 4 is just to short. Good luck with yours.
Vito

Nice looking fig tree Fico!
Does the main BN ripen for you?   Also what is the climate zone for Sardinia?

I think you need a greenhouse! :)

Main crop ripens very well, since the beginning of september.
The climatic zone of my orchard is 9b, as you can see the grass is already dry.

Finally brebas are getting ripe!

Very big and heavy, the flavor is very good, sweet and scented.

Some other brebas:

Verdino (im not sure, it must be unifere):

Brown Turkey (English BT), to my surprise, very sweet and flavourful, with melon and banana aroma.
This is a very small plant, but goodwill, also because it has not yet been watered. The interior was a little strange, with pink shades, and orange pulp, different to other figs; unfortunately it's very small.
Main crop of last year was tasteless (in pot):

Niedda, a typical sardinian variety:

Hi Fico

Congratulations !
Very nice brebas !

As Herman said the Brogiotto Nero brebas may have received pollination from local Caprifigs.
This may indicate that you could well have good Profichi pollen and wasps at a very early stage, may be late April or early May.

If you can, check if a fig seed from those BN brebas floats or not .. then you have the confirmation.
Even in your environment I would say that it is very uncommon to see caprificated brebas of that caliber

Good luck

Hi Francisco,
i thought that only the main crop could be pollinated.
Thereabout there are hundreds of caprifigs,
but far enough away.

Actually these brebas are "seedy", next time will check if the seeds float.

Thanks a lot!

Hey Fico. Nice figs. Also a photo of the interior would be nice to make us all a bit more jealous lol.

Hi Fico,

Yes, that's a wise thought ..However a good deal of varieties loose their very early brebas , including 3 or 4 of my Smyrna types and this because at the proper time Profichis are still 'green' and wasps are yet to be! this happens through March/April in our zones.

if given the good climatic conditions,  wasps will travel long distances once pulled by the pheromone scents emanating from receptive figs.

I put the seeds in a glass of water; most floats, but some sink.
The figs of the Dauphine, wich is San Pedro, are growing without my intervention:

comparing Brogiotto and Niedda:

Longue d'aout (the main crop has a very big ostiole, and the ants enter).
For me the taste is quite slight, i hope that this year is better:

A little curiosity: this small LdA plant has ripened fruits through the fall, and also a fig in January, after a big snowfall!
Obviously, the flavour was a little disgusting...
Look at the color: brebas are much lighter in color than main crop.

Hi Fico.

Those seeds sinking to the bottom of the glass were definitely pollinated by the blastophaga.
This is very interesting and mean that not far from your figs you may have early Profichis.

If the Dauphine main crop is ripening well this is also a good indication that most of your figs in that plot shall be pollinated.
My congratulations !

Nice breba's Fico!

Regarding Dauphine being an san pedro type, a fig friend from the far east asked Baud himself and Baud said it's a common fig.

He said he knows plenty of growers in northern France that get main crop to ripen. No fig wasps in northern France, i can assure you that.

Baud said fruit drop might be related to high N fertilizers.

My Dauphine dropped it's main crop for 2 years in a row, but i was feeding them Miracle gro 24-8-16 so high N could have been the reason.
So this year i started out with a 7-9 5 and switched to a 3-6-12 now she's putting on figlets.

If this doesn't help than it's off to the chopping block because my climate is bad for ripening breba's, about 90% of them drop.
