Brooklyn Dark vs. Sicilian Red

Hi everyone,

Upon doing some research of some cuttings I just bought from Jon, I read on an older thread that Brooklyn Dark is very similar, and may even be the same variety as Red Sicilian. Do any of you know of this to be true or not?

I have both in cuttings, so I will not be able to tell for a long while.  So I thought of asking you guys if you had any opinions on these 2 varieties.

So frustrating when you find out that a different named variety is the same variety of something else you already have! LOL!

Thank you very much!

I have been trying to validate what I believe to be a Sicilian Red for over two years now. Though I'm not an expert, all of the research that I have done leads me to believe that many of the figs that originated from Sicily have been named multiple different things over the years however, they are probably the same variety or are very closely related.

My Sicilian Red has fruited but my Brooklyn Dark hasn't so I can't compare figs however if you want I can take photos of the leaves to compare them.

I should have a ripe fruit on this Brooklyn Dark in a week or so.I planted this 2nd year fig in June and it has been growing well and I've been clipping off a number of baby figs lately.

About 2/3 of the wood on this Sicilian Red was killed in winter 2014. I have another in ground SR that was killed to the ground, but it has sprouted back and growing well now.IIRC the figs that ripened last year were OK,but nothing special taste wise IMO.

I don't have a Sicilian Red to compare it with.
but here's my Brooklyn Dark, I named it brooklyn dark, not sure if there are others with the same name.

It took about a week for my Brooklyn Dark to ripen after it began to darken. It appears to have a large eye if this fig isn't an aberration.I do not believe the large eye was due to excess water.I was trying to let this one ripen fully without spoiling.I think another day and it would have spoiled.Ants were going at the eye for the last three days of ripening. The fig had a very good grape flavor. Several more should ripen in 1-2 weeks. I will try and find my pics of my Red Sicilian on another computer.

Some dirt blew into the eye when I was cutting the grass around the tree :(  Ignore the brown specks in the flesh of the fig below ;)

I ended up getting several ripe Sicilian Red figs before the yellow jackets finished them off. They tasted pretty good.Similar jam taste like MBVS and Hardy Chicago, but with a sweetness like a small Celeste. The skin has a powdery look like Celeste.

The rest of my Brooklyn Dark figs that have ripened have a large eye.
