I have some brown leaf spots starting to show-up on my potted VdB.  After searching the forum it looks like it could be a sign of stress. If this is what it is, could this be from too much water?  

I used moisture control soil when I planted this fig (after doing some research, this looks like a bad choice).  We had a good amount of rain a couple days ago and the soil still feels quite damp/wet. If too much moisture is the culprit, should I repot in another soil type or will this be an okay choice for the warm relatively dry summers in my zone?  

This is a tough one.  I have seen dozens of photos from fig trees in Italy, Spain, Greece, and everywhere.  HUGE trees, and the leaves have brown spots.  Nobody cares.  The figs come, ripen and are good.  If your tree is potted, well, then things can happen.  I think your tree looks great!  I wouldn't stress over one leaf.

Miracle-Gro moisture control soil would be a bad idea here on the east coast for figs.  I tried this once the first year I grew figs in containers - it didn't go well.  In southern CA you might be able to get it to work but probably not ideal. 

This is common in figs i hate it because i grow figs for ornamental quality and for the fruit. I have a huge green ischia that starts this brown spot thing mid season by time nain crop arises its full of the spots. I am going to try fertilizer and fungaside early this season and see what happens i heard fertilizer will make it grow healthier but you get less fruit. richie from louisiana zone 8

It just occurred to me that this winter was pretty warm and many of my figs never went dormant.  Then one day, a cold front blew in and although the temps were high 30's, there was a cold draft way above and snow fell.  Many of the leaves that didn't go dormant are covered in brown spots... figs, mulberry, mango, avocado, macadamia......  Could your fig have gotten a little snow burn?

No snow here.  It did go from being very warm to cold at night in the matter of a couple weeks.  

It last rained 9 days ago and I haven't watered since.  The soil is still quite wet.  Wondering if I should ditch the MircacleGrow moisture control soil

The leaves look healthy but they look like they are curling up a bit.
I would be careful with the watering and see how the plant does.

Yeah, apparently the plant is getting a bit too much water as the leaves are curling up. The brown spots are very common ans should not be a concern. Keep and eye on that plant and do post another picture if the condition of the plant worsens.

Shawn, add water and move to Florida. Humidity here has been 20% or less for the last week, with light Santa Ana winds and fairly warm temps. Nothing to panic about. It is what plants do in stressful conditions. Curling is quite normal on VdB.

FYI, leaves are a "trailing" indicator. They tell you about past history, not current conditions (except maybe for wilting).

Thanks everyone for the comments.  I also have a celeste is the same potting medium  that is starting to grow leaves, but it has been very slow growing and doesn't look too happy.  Is the soil being too wet an issue here or is that how Celeste looks?
