My new tree is probably wondering what the heck is happening.  Take a trip in a truck in a box, get re-planted in some strangers yard who is doing all sorts of strange things haha!

Training four of the lower limbs for horizontal and air layering off the top main with a smaller air layer going on it also.

The air layer containers are polypropylene tapered tubs, quart and pint sizes that I have on hand for mushroom spawn growing.  I melted holes in the bottoms and lid to fit the limbs, cutting them to the holes for installation and taping before filling with damp media.

Have air layered before but never espalier.  I'm not sure how well these pvc pipes and ties will function.

Thanks for sharing the picture and info.
One suggestion for the branches being trained as horizontals, let them grow as verticals until they are close to your desired length, then place them horizontal. From my experience they will gain the desired length (height) much faster, especially once the air layer is removed along with its Apical dominance.

Thanks Pete, that makes sense.  I haven't a clue what length I desire though.  Two or three feet?  Is it best to slowly bend the limb onto a straight form or will they do so quickly without snapping off?

It depends on the cultivar and the age and caliper of the branch, but I have been able to bend 1-1/2" caliper branches in multiple steps over a 2 week period and branches under a year old usually bend easily.
