Today, I drove into a neighborhood where I cane upon a beautiful fig tree with some gorgeous BIG figs! I knocked on the door & the owners told me how happy they were that I asked permission instead of just taking them. They told me it is a Brown Turkey then proceeded to pull off figs. They gave me four figs!! Then I asked the question..."can I get a couple of cuttings"? They looked puzzled so I gave them some info about propegating figs from cuttings so they were fine wuth it. I cut two nice branches:-). Then I said my goodbyes, sped home to savor my BT figs. Let me tell you, these were some deliscious figs!! A sweet honey taste that melts in your mouth! So!! I have several cuttings to exchange. Anyone interested? PM me if you are. Sorry I changed my post to just this, I was just very confident that it is not any of the 3 brown turkey figs varieties I have, as I have over 300 brown turkey fig trees and have been growing brown turkey figs for 10 years now. I will just post a pic of them here so you can see mine. I see now that california brown turkey is not anything close to mine and I did not know that it was a unique variety, and not just a regular brown turkey type grown in california. __________________ (Zone 12a) Big Island, Hawaii, 2,400 ft elevation, Fern Forest. The owners said they planted it three years ago so based on the fact that it's recent, I think it's less likely they both firgot. Wow, Figgysid, it does look just like it! Its puzzling to me since both husband & wife said it was a BT. Okay but the good news is that I got their cell & email! I read the noir de berbatane has a meaty texture and has berry tones to the flavor. Meg you said it has a honey flavor that melts in your mouth.. It looks like a great fig. Chad

Yes, I thought it was a great sweetness like honey. Im new at figs & my description may be too simplistic. It's fairly common for figs to be labeled wrong. Some folks I know have been calling their Brunswick a BT for fifteen years. Looks like you have a good one there Meg. :) __________________ Zone 7A ~ Fort Smith area Arkansas

Thanks, Charlie. I wish I could have gotten a few more figs from them. The tree had tons of figs! Well, beggers can'tbe choosers. It looks like a pollinated fig, a BT in CA is not your average BT from PA, it is superb over here. I am not saying the fig in this thread IS a BT, just saying that a BT is a good fig when caprified. __________________ wish list: Violeta, Calderona. USDA z 10a, SoCal

Oh how great Meg. This looks like the brown turkey I am familiar with here in the Verde Valley. My friend Daisy from Bolivia has a 9 year old brown turkey that produces enough figs for her to supply 3 farmers's markets for the summer weekly from her one tree. It is amazing. I wish I knew how to post a pic from my phone. It is huge. I love your story about meeting the owners of the tree. We are getting the last of our figs here as it is dropping below freezing now. The eye of the green unripe fig in the first pictures is not red, they eye/ostiole of unripe fig in the link to Leon's figs is undeniably red. Not NdB, and as Igor just stated a pollinated fig will look much different than unpollinated. Please keep us updated, Meg! That is one perfect looking fig, inside and out. And I love the purplish shade against the green foliage. I really hope you'll be able to get a few more cuttings~ maybe the owners would even want to trade for cuttings of something else you're growing?... I believe it was PeteC who traded cuttings with me. Though im not sure if the cuttings i sent him took. Maybe he will respond. I am just in the beginning stages of starting my cuttings and these will be part of my first batch. I'll post pics. Also, when I talk with the owners agsin, I'll ask what type of nursery & cultural background the owner is or if they know anything more. Maybe i can get more clues. might be another Peter here, we have not exchanged yet. Thanks PeterC...can't remember all the names too well and going back through my PMs is a bit time consuming but thanks for confirming it wasn't you. I am so looking forward to a good fig in spring when things start warming up. There are plenty of trees nearby too. Your unknowns look pretty good. I wish I could find out what these two might be...I posted this with hope someone could guess. The one that really intrigues me is the light wood tree (images 1-5). I just have seen it over many years just hanging with fruit but never have tasted it. Many large branches hang over and the figs fall on the sidewalk. This year, I will be picking them. It is a neglected tree that until recently no one cared about. I went there several days ago to pick cuttings and now it looks like someone is tending to it though its behind an apartment complex so it is not anyone's tree so to speak. So! Yesterday I got a call from the owners of the "Not so much like a BT" tree near my home. He said, cone over tomorrow and get some cuttings! These people are just so nice. The wife Collene had home-made ginger fig jam, plum jam AND dehydrated figs waiting for me!!! Unbelievably kind people. In return, i am giving her a plumeria cutting, lemons, corn seeds and my Mary Washington asparagus seeds :-). He cut and I kept picking up :-) It's been a great day and not just because I got free cuttings but because I was touched by the kindness of others who dont even know me. As with people here on this group who have beren so very kind to me (THANK YOU!), I am truly blessed!! I have a good batch of cuttings maybe for 10 people. I know i promised 4 people cuttings so I have enough for another six who want for them fir price of postage. First come... Oooh...you have a plumeria. I have one that has been growing in a pot on my patio for 2 seasons now. Sleeps in my garage in the winter. They sound truly kind and giving.... The weather here has gone from rain to bone chilling cold for a few days, but it's supposed to be warming up at which time I WILL go on my own first fig tree expedition. I haven't forgotten our (hopeful) trade! __________________ ~New to growing figs, I currently have tiny fig plants which are supposedly Little Ruby, Violette de Bordeaux, Desert King, and Petite Negri. I hope these were accurately labeled! Now rooting LSU Gold and Purple, Celeste, Panache, Peter's Honey, and Unknown Varieties from cuttings, thanks to generous forum members. Figs on my current wish list (along with any others recommended): Osborne Prolific, Battaglia Green, Smith, Kadota, Italian Honey, Atreano, Verte or Green Ischia, Panache, Peter's Honey, Black Madeira, Smith, Noir de Caromb, etc. ~

Joe: Yes, I have a couple of cuttings that I'm growing. Sounds like you like Plumerias too :-) Alanamerica: The owners bought the tree at a nursery so it could have been either mislabeled. They have many fruit trees on their property. And, I asked them again about the age of the tree and they corrected and said its been much longer than just a few years as they previously thought. It could be 6 or 7 years old but dont remember the nursery. However, we have plans to getvtogether and can some fruit & veggies so I will tickle her (Colleen's) memory as we talk to see if there is anymore info she remembers. Very interesting info you have posted here! I noticed that this fig has a very short neck too as I read in one of the Turkey fig descriptions...somewhere. Yes, Overseas shipping would not work. However, I now have some cuttings and will test this tree to see how it does for others and I will surely keep you and the group informed. Weight: not sure but this is a BIG fig. I downloaded a scale app for my iPhone but it didnt seem to work very well. So, rather than just guess, I'll wait for good fruit to come from my new found friends, Dan & Colleen when I'll have a real scale. Also, I ate two figs while i was there and although they were far from ripe, even at the soft stage, they were pretty good. The pics below show the short neck. I placed this fig on a table spoon for size comparison (no quarter). Joy: have a great time fig hunting!! I'll wait to see your posts. And, yes, I have cuttings for you :-D! For those who think Meg's fig pictures are NOT brown Turkey, think again (smile). Meg's pictures come from a tree in southern California (correct me if I'm wrong Meg). Southern Ca has the fig wasp. Those figs look exact like the figs in the orchard of UC Davis labeled Brown Turkey. This is not a bad thing! Brown Turkey figs are very rich tasting and super sweet! They will look different and taste different if pollinated by the wasp. Brown Turkey figs are almost black due to the long sunny hot days there. All common figs look and taste completely different when pollinated by the wasp. I wish everyone here had the opportunity to taste caprified figs by the wasp. If so, you will see why Californians that moving to the East Coast rant and rave about Brown Turkey figs. One taste and you will see! Nice find Meg! Chuck, the figs are larger, sweeter, richer, larger seeds, and usually darker in color if in a hot climate. In CA, both the Calfornia Brown Turkey and the plain Brown Turkey taste freaking amazing!!!! And so is Zidi! Zidi is large, super sweet, super rich and absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Monrovia Brown Turkey is pretty much tasteless in my climate. The figs are large yes, but the eye is so wide open. I'm sure if the figs were pollinated by the wasp they would be 10x better in all categories. The Petal from the Past Brown Turkey on the other hand would probably be sweeter, larger, and much richer if it was in pollinated by the wasp. __________________ Dennis Charlotte, North Carolina/Zone 8a
