Brown Turkey cuttings using sphagnum moss

Hello everyone,

I am new to rooting fig. This morning I got 4 thicker brown turkey cuttings (about 3/4" to 1" thick) from a friend and would like to use sphagnum moss to root them in a plastic tray with lid in Southern California. The time now is in latter part of July... pretty hot down here. Here are my questions...

1. Should the tray be kept in a dark place? If not then how bright the light should be?
2. Is outdoor location okay?
3. Anything else that I need to know?

Thank you for your help.

John

I found the beast way to root cuttings is to wrap the upper half in grafting tape, and bury lower half in pro mix, had like 90% success or u can use perlite with vermiculite, the way u are doing will work also but if kept together the roots get knotted up and they are very fragile, I've started cuttings that way, and at first sight of roots I move to pro mix, cause if kept together and roots knot trying to unknot them you will pull all roots off, and I keep them indoors in indirect sunlight.

Hi,
Since you have 4, try this with one of them:
If it has leaves shorten the leaves by 2/3 .
Put it in a bottle of water 2/3 of its length in the water. Change the water every day or every other day, during 2 weeks .
Put it then in a pot of loam in a partial shady spot. Bury it 2/3 same as with the water.
Keep the loam fresh. You can use a plate under the pot to keep some water available to the loam in the pot.
I've had good success this time of the year with this method.
Good luck !

Just for fun I will try the 2 above suggested methods plus sphagnum moss method. Will report back in a few weeks.

Thanks guys!
