Brown Turkey Lobes

I keep reading the BT leaf is 7 lobes than i see it with 5 lobes. What gives?

Firstly, the BT may be the most mis-identified fig there is.  Secondly, the best it gets is trying to determine the dominant leaf, BT and Celeste will both have 3 lobe and 5 lobe.  Thirdly, it may depend on the age of the tree.

I have never seen a 7 lobed BT around here, not to say that they aren't, only that I haven't seen one.  If I saw a tree around here that had 7 lobes, I would post pictures and ask for help to ID.

Brianm,
The California Brown Turkey may produce 5 lobed leaves with thumbs, they are often called 7 lobed. Most fig trees that normally produce 5 lobed leaves will produce "7 lobed" leaves when the branch is growing quickly or has been fertilized.  The node spacing is sometimes an indicator of these growth spurts, longer internode distances usually equals greater number of lobes. This topic on Brown Turkeys has a few pictures and may help to answer some of your questions, http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=6381140
Good Luck.

The depth of the sinuses is determined by the position on the tree. Leaf size is determined by the width of the stem. Apical growths often show deeply lobed, large leaves, which have more veins and therefore the opportunity to produce additional lobes. We don't think of plants as being "smart" but in fact they are. Canopy leaves allow more light to enter so that interior leaves can function efficiently (which they do).

Addendum
If you are looking at a Texas Everbearing you will see 7 lobes, which is why I contend they are not the same as the Southern BT, which is not the same as the EBT.
