Hello,

I live in California and I bought a potted Brown Turkey fig.  When I bought it it was nothing more than a 5 ft tall stick in a pot.  Now it's started to leaf and has two figs on it.  The problem is, it still looks like a stick in a pot with a clump of leaves at the top.  It doesn not appear to be letting out any growth along the trunk below the top cluster of leaves.  What do I need to do to guide the plant into a shapely tree, with branches and what not?  Should I cut off the top half to encourage branching?  Any advice would be appreciated.

I would let it go for this year and plan on pruning in the fall- by then you may have an idea on how you want it to look in the future, based on where you will be planting it and so on..... but this advice is coming from a fairly new figgy person!
