Bulgaria

We just had a nice visit with some old family friends who are living in Bulgaria.
Does anyone have experience with figs from there?

I have a Cornelian Cherry from Bulgaria there very good.

I wish we could grow cherries here

There different from cherries they have a olive shape and are burgundy in color there a dogwood that have edible fruits.I got them because my dad loves them.Where he grew up they ate alot of these tarty tasting fruits.

Jim,
They have a small area of zone 8a-8b near the border of Turkey and Greece. They should share some common varieties with northern Turkey and Greece, to my understanding. However, I do not know how those varieties would do in the US because their climate is much drier, and they do not have much heath, by American standards. Germplasm repository in CA has three pomegranate varieties that have originated in Bulgaria: Nikitskii Rannii, Shrin Zigar, and Hotuni Zigar.

Rob-what specie is the cornus it sounds interesting
Boris - The pomegranates sound like something to look into maybe there are some local varieties I know cuttings are the only thing that would come true but it might be fun to grow seeds from them as well.

It's a cornus mas.Raintree nursery sells the Bulgarian cornus mas there delicious if you like tarty fruit.

I do I do thanks I have to look into that one

Hey Jim,

I just looked up raintrees edibles dogwoods and they didn't have any of the Bulgarian dogwoods.I'm pretty sure if you call them they should have some available in the spring or fall. The varieties name is kazanlak cornelian cherry.Goodluck if that don't work I could give you some seeds not sure if they'll set fruit that way but it might be worth a try. Thanks

Thanks for the information I will look into it

Hey Jim,
I'll try some for you.  We have the heat and dryness.

I am going to get him to check out the different options with figs and other fruit and if I get anything you know some will be heading your way:)
They are going back in April and we will see them several more times before that so I will have a chance to educate them a little as to what to look for.
