Now that is a pretty sight, BLB. Great picture.

Just curious...

Is your source a cutting or nursery?

Bought from Raintree but small emerging figs look very similar to VdB.

Dominick,

I got that tree from Parks Seed about 5 years ago. I also have a VDB and the figs do look very similar, however, there are differences with the leaves. Very possible that Parks misnamed it and it is something else as that seems to happen often in the trade. That is why nearly all the rest of my figs are from forum members or other well known fig growers like JR or East Coast. This tree is loaded with main crop figs, that cluster of brebas along with a few other brebas. I ate a couple already, but they were not very good. I'm leaving these on as long as I can to see if that makes a difference.

I 've heard that the Raintree fig  may be mislabeled as well but the tree's leaves are very similar but still both very young.

Everybody raves about the VdB ( haven't tasted yet) so having 2 may not be that bad. I'll find out in a few months hopefully.

Is your tree small and a slow grower? Mine has put on over 6 inches in just under 2 months so 'petite' it may not be.

Dominick,

Mine is anything but petite, it is quite large and I would say a moderate grower, not real fast not real slow. It is over 6 foot tall and very wide, grown in a pot. In fact I put it in a large but very shallow and wide bonsai type pot then failed to prune it as I turned my bonsai techniques on another fig. VDB is indeed a very good fig as is this one. I also have the Vista which is supposed to be even a little better than VDB, but I won't about that until it fruits. Yeah I would say good to have 2 or more of these!!!

Barry

Your pic looks great.

If mine looks anything like yours I'll be very excited. I pinched it and within 2 weeks it sent out small figs( on both PN and VdB).

Barry,

My Petite Negra (2000) also came from Park Seeds.
I do not recall of me ever having fruit with such a looong stem and (specially) neck?!
I agree with you that it is not a petite/dwarf, at least if grown in pots,
has the same growth habits as my (EL) VdB (with similar fruit too)...

George,

Yes kinda loong indeed LOL  Only wish they tasted as good as they look or half as good as the main crop. Main crop figs are much more conventionally round with a much shorter neck. I got my VDB from you about 4 years ago, is it a propopgation from your EL VDB do you recall?

Thanks Dominic and Gene, I have to credit my step son, he took the pic and then showed me how to load it onto the site. I am not very computer savvy.

Barry,

Try slicing one each of the Petit Negra (Petit Negri?) & VDB lengthwise and photograph them.  You may find there are internal color differences as well as the leaf differences.  One NAFEX member asserts they are the same variety but I disagree!

Hi Kiwibob,

I can do that with main crop, unfortunatley no more brebas on my VDB. I checked out your website, very nice.  I am growing hardy kiwis, but too cold for the fuzzy ones.

Yes Barry,

The only VdB I ever had came from  (2002) EL, and sooo is yours.
BTW, the PN and VdB are both among of my favorite 'keeper' figs.
Watch the fruit getting better as the trees age...

Thanks for that information George, that adds to my plant's pedigree. You mean they will get better than great!! Ha Looking forward to that!!! I have read right here on this forum that many of the trees produce better fruit as they age and I have noticed that somewhat in the few years I have been growing. I'm certainly seeing much higher yields each year too.

Beautiful picture BLB .Look similar to my Negronne from OGW.

Thanks Rob0520. The figs are still hanging on the tree, but look like they are about to fall off. Think I'm gonna pick them today and see if they are any better tasting than the first brebas I picked.
