Calderona

I searched the internet for this fig only to find very little written about it.

Here it is on ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Calderona-fig-tree-/141746862803?hash=item2100c57ad3

Any of you folks know about this fig or ebay seller?

I have this fig but its only six months old. Search this sight for pons varieties and you will find it.

Jerry_M,

You can find more information here:

The file is large (75 Mb PDF) and contains information on almost all fig cultivars of Mallorca, including Calderona:

Unfortunately its in Catalan, so its a bit difficult to figure out some things (even with the help of google translator), but i can manage to understand almost everything if you need to translate something.

That is marius, he is a member here, and a very trustworthy seller in my opinion, I've bought from him a few times, I just received a cdd ciutat from him yesterday as matter of fact.

That's very interesting information, Quackmaster. Thanks.

That's one fig i have on my wish list (Coll de dame de Ciutat) - i love the cracks in the skin, although without a long summer it may never quite get that look.

Jsacadura, thanks for the reference. How can you tell if the figs pictured are common or if they need fig wasp?

Hi, Jerry.

That information is answered in pag.53 -

"Tipus de floració: el descriptor de l’IPGRI tracta només la floració de cada una de les collites de cabrafiguera. Nosaltres l’hem adaptat també per a la figuera, encara que per a totes les cultivars de figuera comuna prospectades a Mallorca la floració és partenocàrpica."

Which means that in this study they didn't mention types of flowers of caprifigs because every cultivar of Common Figs prospected in Mallorca are parthenocarpic.

To answer your question: - They are all Common figs. So the wasp is not needed for any cultivar in this document.

Jsacadura, thank you so much. There are some fine looking figs here.

I think I found the taste descriptor, i.e.,Sabor: dolç, fat, picant translates to Taste: sweet, fat, spicy, using the following translator http://imtranslator.net/translation/catalan/to-english/translation/

I am having just too much fun for an older 72 year old retiree....should be out grinding cedar stumps making way for fig trees.

So that is a ripe cdd ciutat? Wow, the only time I've seen it is in Pon's book, idk if the humidity here will allow them to ripen like this.

Jerry,

I'm a bit envy. Even with some chores i would love to be retired to have more time for my fig hobby and if those chores free space for more fig trees, even better. :-)

Regarding Taste (Sabor), they have the following scale:

Excellent (excel-lent)
Very Sweet - molt doç - (some when ripe - madura)
Sweet - dolç (dolç i apreciat - sweet and liked; bo i apreciat - good and liked))
Not very Sweet - poc dolç - normal
Watery - aigualit
Plain (fat - these are mainly used as food for animals, like pigs - "Consum per bestiar porcí")

Some are plain if fresh and good dried ("fat fresc, bona sec" or "gustós si es seca" - nice, if dried), probably due to the concentration of sugars.

Ryan,

I specially like figs with these spiderweb patterns but it's as you say - without sufficient and prolonged dry heat we may never see it in our figs.
Paratjal y Paratjal rimada are also two other favorites of these Mallorca figs.

I just ran cdd ciutat through translator. It returned cdd city. Is this fig a cdd from the city?

Well both od these sure do look appealing!

It does means from the city. I don't know what's the origin of the name.

About Calderona - on this old post, Axier, gave us a link to a video that shows Mr. Montserrat Pons with that fig:

I enjoy video very much. Thanks

I have one growing with a few figs on it, should ripen soon. Will report back by that time.

Thanks Rob. Looking forward to your report.
