Calimyrna? Really?

My UC Davis fig order included three nice Calimyrna cuttings. Pretty sure I can't grow them here. I double checked my order. I did ask for them. What was I thinking? Ugh.

I got three nice big sticks with close node spacing. Each one could easily be divided into two or three cuttings. I might keep one just see for myself what happens.

So, two Calimyrna sticks are up for grabs for the cost of shipping. First, I will only mail them to an address where I can verify that the fig wasp exists. Second, you must answer this fig trivia question:

Where did the Fig Newton get it's name?

Yes, the obvious answer is figs. The winner will post the other part of the answer here along with affirmation of being in a fig wasp area.

I am close to the Fig Wasp area, think BrianM is in the heart of it.....Great Offer !!!!   On the Question...????

Paul, you should be able to grow them fine.  If you don't have a caprifig populated with wasps near your place, you should get one or hunt around for one somewhere in the area.  You only need to place a a few of the caprifigs around your Calimyrna in June, maybe a second time in July just to be sure.

Are you trying to make a sell Harvey...LOL

Armando, I may sell caprifigs at some point but certainly don't have any for sale now and don't know when I will.  I have some airlayers going to send to other folks that want them and one for myself.  Feel free to fill the void! :)

I will keep one stick and make three cuttings from it. If at least one survives, that will be enough for me to experiment with.

Armando, do you know the answer to the question? Where does the name "Fig Newton" come from (other than figs)?

No, don't know the answer. I am pretty smart. Earlier today was thinking about how to spell Monkeys or is it Monkies or Monkys...????...LOL

Only a Guess, Newton is in there to honor Isaac Newton. and Fig stands for a figure of speech....LOL

If you are referring to the pop band from the 60's, that would be The Monkees.

Isaac Newton is an excellent guess.

Wrong.

Will have to Pass to Harvey. He is also smart.

I'm up to my ears in Calimyrna cuttings lol

This year order a few caprifig cuttings from UCD and then in 3 years order some wasp bearing caprifigs (the fruit) and you'll be set.

@Cyberfarmer, send them over, i'll root them for Armando.

I will have to trade my Celeste for your Calimyrna....also bring the fig wasp...LOL

If you watch the "Big Bang Theory" you will know the answer!!

Paul, your other figs would also benefit (improved quality and size) if you had some caprifigs around.  Not saying Calimyrna would be my top choice of a Smyrna fig (maybe you want to dry some figs, though?).

OK, so I'm not sure how to call this one. Charles pointed out that the answer lies within "Big Bang Theory" (I've never seen it). Harvey actually posted a clip from BBT including a statement with the correct answer. Do either or both of you want them, or are you just showing off that you know the answer? Are either of you (or anybody else) claiming these cuttings?

wait a minute!
Paul you are in zone 10A, you Do have wasps in the air dude.

Really? I was looking at this: http://figs4fun.com/Var_C_info.html#CALIMYRNA

It says, "Not practical for southern growers". I assumed that included southern California. I thought I had to be up by Fresno or closer to the area where all the commercial fig orchards are. I guess it meant southern as in y'all down south.

I like Calimyrna figs. I buy them dried all the time. We can grow them here? How smart of me to order them. This is paradise!

Paul, you need more of a drawl in your speech to qualify for "the south" that they're talking about there.

I ordered Calimyrna myself and assume I'll probably be receiving it from Davis shortly.

Y'all have ta live down chere an carry a gun to not have the wasp LOL

yes ah AM serious! Los Angeles is 10A-10B and we have wasp everywhere. and if we don't we lore them in with our females...

Well then, never mind.
