Calvert and JH Adriatic.

been growing them side by side. the figs were little different last yr, but the leaves and growth characteristics are very similar.

will post pix of figs and the leaves later this yr. they both seems to push long stem leaves.

Pete, they might be cousins but not even close to being the same variety. I have 3 JH Adriatic trees. Two are large, the other is small. Calvert----well I have 3--each pretty close to being same age and all. Calvert is a small dwarf tree. Even the one at UCD is small. UCD has both Adriatic and Calvert. So, they are not the same.

dennis, after you mentioned it, Calvert is much smaller tree. the skin is much darker last yr also. we need weather like 2012... only the first fig had that super tart flavor. i'm thinking that was one off.

Pete, for those that have Calvert, they better treat is like gold b/c one of the Calverts at UCD is gravely ill!  I know UCD has duplicate trees in their orchard but if my memory servers me right, I think the one on the A side is dead.  And the one of the B side is severly twisted in the ground.  I talked to John Priest about this and he said there isn't nothing they can do.  The trees were planted without untangling the root years ago.

After I saw this 2 yrs ago at UCD, I started collecting Calverts.  Today, I have 4 or 5.  Yes Calvert has FMV, what fig doesn't!  Most figs grow fine with it so in my opinion, just enjoy your Calvert and bring it inside every year.  I plan on never cutting my trees unless I have to--- just letting it big and strong over the next 5 years or so and feed it liquid fertilizer.

Dennis,
Thx 4 info. I rooted 4 of the 5 Calvert cuttings I had last year and I did not see evidence of FMV so I sold 3 of them. I guess I better hope my last one grows enough to get extras from.

rooted.. i don't know how many. i thought i was out of Calvert and keep finding another one. i gave away most, and dump the rest. kept one that i chopped in certain places to give me best branch with most uniform leaves. i'm only keeping it since the very first fig was so unique. it had that sharp tart taste. i think jon mentioned something similar. however, after that very first fig, i didn't taste that tartness. i'm hoping it will come back.
