Can this twig be brought back to life?

I started this VDB twig in April this year and it seemed to be doing fairly okay, up until two weeks ago when we started to get lots of rain. I guess it didn't like that and started to look sickly and never recovered.
Someone suggested I cut off the growth parts and then stick it back in the fridge for a month and try again. Does that really work?
Based on the condition of my twig, will it work?

Is the brown part of any concern?

Does the brown part scrape right off with your finger nail. If it does cut off

Sorry, I think you're done. The black looks like rot to me. If you cut all of the rot off, are there any green parts with healthy nodes?

The brown spot is rot. Not a good sign for the life of the cutting.

With only one node and the rotten/dead portion butting right up to it, chances are not good, but no harm in trying.

Plant it horizontal. It MIGHT root, but I doubt it.

No point to put it in the fridge.  That can only lower your chances.  Go ahead and stick it in the dirt/pot.
