Canada's Largest Fig Tree

Big Fig

Fig Maestro Umberto Garbuio

The largest fig tree in Canada is taking over a residential backyard in Burnaby, BC. Or it would be if it weren’t being expertly tended by its owner, Umberto Garbuio.

Umberto gets hundreds of pounds of figs off his monster plant each year. He eats some, gives away some, makes jams and wines and still hasn’t gotten tired of them. And who would? The taste of a warm, sweet fig is a Mediterranean treat.

But is Umberto’s tree really the largest? It was reported as such in the Vancouver Sun a few years ago. Ever since, people with  big fig trees of their own have sought him out, convinced there’s been some mistake. One look at his 40-foot-wide by 16-foot-high plant, and they invariably leave humbled.

From my time that I spent living in Vancouver I can say his tree is not the only one that is so large.

I have never been to B.C yet but the two biggest I seen in Ontario are Adriano's Capelas & Desert King he has in Ground. The Capelas takes up half the back wall of his house.

Thats a nice size fig tree, what zone is that i ask because of the size of tree 40 ft wide by 16 tall and i imagine he cannot cover it being so big so i say to myself is it possible that it can put on so much growth in a season or are the winters mild in that area.

I've past a house in Mississauga, On whos backyard faces the main road has a fig tree approx. 12' to 15' tall. Couldn't tell how wide it was.
For you local guys, The house is south of 401 off/near Erin Mills.

That area of BC (Vancouver area) is Zone 8 to Zone 7.

Thanks Ottawan, when i think of Canada i had always related it to cold weather and never realized or gave much thought that there could be a zone 7 or 8 but you gentleman know what your talking about .

Primarily Vancouver is zone 8 unless you live on top of Burnaby Mt.There lots of fig trees in Vancouver, mostly Desert King. In Vancouver proper I think you can find fig trees on every street.
