Can't I just put the cutting in a pot...????

I am asked this many times. I like to use the baggy method to see the root development. Here are some of my extra cuttings that I decided to put in a special mix and hope for the best. I don't know what the mix is consisted of...??? it drains well. I lost some big trees from RKN and so I microwaved its potting mix and reused it for these special projects........... These cuttings are an average of about 3-4 inches. The important thing is to not have the cuttings to close to each other in case one dies and starts to mold. The bag has a few small holes. Normally I use a needle to poke holes. I am planning to separate the three cuttings when the trees go dormant in January. The second pot, I am going to pour out the cuttings and the mix in 2 weeks. This variety roots fast. It doesn't have an official name, I just call it Family Favorite. In the future may be called the Black Mamba....LOL

NICE JOB. ROOTS EVERY WHERE! I ALSO ROOT IN BAGS. WHEN I HAVE ROOTS EVERYWHERE IT CONFUSES ME. I PLANTED TWO CUTTING THAT HAD MASSIVE ROOTS OVER WHOLE CUTTING SIDE WAYS. MADE LIKE 6 PLANTS IN ONE POT. WHEN IT GROWS UP WILL HAVE MAJOR BRANCHING FROM BOTTOM. GOING TO TRAIN IT TO GROW WIDE AND ONLY 6 FOOT TALL

Good start.
What kind of soil are you using. It looks like some kind of crushed rock (like lava rock)?

I've put a few in a pot, but separating them when dormant isn't easy.  Their roots co-mingle.  It is what it is.  You will have to root prune, but as long as you top prune, it will all work out great!

I agree. If more than one cutting in a pot survive, prepare for a nightmare .
I did that last year and never again .

Ottawan: I will investigate the mix. The original collector sold me many trees. I will text him tommorow. Suzi and Greenfig: This is just an experiment, do you think I should seperate them out now...??? If leave all in the same pot maybe I will twist them together...??? These are extras anyway.

Armando, wait until they go dormant to separate.  I've bare-rooted and root pruned ~9 month old trees without issue.

Hi Armando,
Nice start .
Keep them together and later -should/can be following year - airlayer the ones you want to pot separately . Later, you can pot them up, all together.
If you try to separate them now or too soon, you might kill them all .
Just my opinion, they are yours, the decision is yours :) .
For the question, for me, my perfect answer is: Rather stick them in the ground !

I've done this as well But I use 2 per pot on varieties I have excess cuttings of. Then, if I give them away, it's 2 plants. If I sell, its 2 for 1. I plant 2 to a hole on my property anyway. I have 5 acres but two per hole is a great combo of space saving and maximum production. I should add the two per hole method is with two of the same variety.

Armando, when you pot them like this, do you use a bottom or other heat source?  I have a few extra sticks I may try out this method.   Thanks.

i like this idea. Usei g three different varieties and twisting them together and make a tree

Thanks for all the advice. Will keep them together and see in the winter how the roots look. May be able to seperate one or none...??? I like the idea one price for the price of three. I think in the future I will get a bigger pot and put 2 different varieties and no twisting of them. The only heat source is a warm home, they are inside by a window.

If you want to separate them the best way to is to put them in a pail full of warm water, rinse the soil away, them gently tease the roots apart.  Then you can pot them up separately.

Thanks JDSFrance...get airlayers in the future, sounds like a possibility. Thanks Rcantor, since I have a lot of extra cuttings, will leave it alone. Dirtguy: The info I got is that its a mixture of well composted cow manure, coarse perlite, coarse sand used for gardening and potting mix. This what he texted me. I will ask more questions tommorow.

Well I changed my mind after seeing figarita successfully separated her Panache figlets that were in a similar situation.  Thanks to Rcantor I used a bucket with warm water and soaked it for about 5 minutes and worked them gently apart. I did lose one or two roots, but overall was successful to have them all healthy and in their own pots.
