Sex in figs is very "screwed up". Caprifigs are male, but there are issues of persistence that play a role, and some are edible (like a female). Don't know that I have ever seen a full, complete and understandable presentation on the subject. There always seems to be one more exception and more variable and one more wrinkle. For the most part, regardless of their flower "types", etc., etc. they function as male or pollen-donor trees. For the most part they are not something you want to eat.
