I have a junk car, I am trying to use it as greenhouse for now, Any suggestion

6AM outdoor temperature  0C 32F     Inside car 3C 38F
12PM outdoor temperature 5C 41C     Inside car 25C 77C

Problem I have
1). My garden at winter shaded area, It will get full SUN  At May.
2). Squirrel ate all branches of some young fig trees, need to recovered ASAP.
3). I am trying to put a Hoop house in My garden, it will get 50% Sun until Mid of May, Car Greenhouse can park at full Sun area now.

Question:
1). Can I root cuttings in it?
2). Right now, It is 1/4 loaded, If fully loaded, will it regulate temperature at night higher than 38F avoiding damaged new green leaves.
3). What is the high Temperature that fig tree get burned?

Great idea for a figmobile! Reuse is a great way to help environment as long as you or neighbours don't mind looking at your old car.

Probably not suited for rooting cuttings or growing young rooted cuttings.

For rooting you need a steady temperature 25C/77F works nice.
Do you have electricity nearby for a heater, heat matt & timer, fan?
Also temps on sunny days will skyrocket as soon as sun hits car so you will likely miss once & fry the young plants.

My cuttings prefer sunning in my toyota. Honda should work fine though. Just a note: Dauphine likes riding up front.

Ricky, glad you are not my neighbor!  Then again, maybe you would be a good neighbor to have, junk car notwithstanding :)

Ricky, Me and all my 'real friends' have had junk cars in our driveways. So by caveat that makes us buddies. I even have a few friends that don't have junk cars in their driveway, (but were not close). Loved your post. You're a thinker, a doer and a survivor!  A descent pellet gun will easily take care of the ground squirrels (They make good fertilizer too. LOL)

It doesn't bother my neighbor, I have 15 X100Ft space beside me, City doesn't want it, I can put my car there for long time without problem.

Just take out driver seat, so I can store more potted fig trees.

It is snowing here now without any Sun, I do not know why, This car Greenhouse regulates temperature above 40F, Just little sun light, it will quickly up to 70F+ area, it takes 3 days for Potted Azalea sprouts, I will see how long it take to wake up a fig trees.

Be careful. Cars can overheat fast. I had some wrapped cuttings in a bag in my car, thinking that was the warmest place for them to grow new roots. The car heated up and cooked them.

Nice Ricky,, like they said it could turn into an oven. come July ,August you can dry your figs in it. Keep a window down an inch or two.

put a light bulb under a clay pot on a timer for night heat

Thanks for everyone great idea.

I put more fig trees in car greenhouse, It does regulated temperature even more at full sun from 77F down to 70F (outside 41F),  we have cool summer climate,  I have a solar vent fan, It will help too, and If outside temperature higher than 55F, I  will open window as well.

David, I like your idea of putting a light bulb under a clay pot with timer for night heat.

Look up Richard Watts here. He used to have a van parked in his driveway (or maybe still has) where he rooted all his figs with a great success.
He is in California which makes a bit of a difference but still the same method.

Thanks for the good news,  our area is too cool at Summer, If I rooted them in pot outdoor, They will rooted at June.

Here are tooth pick cutting from Aug/last year ( 7 months Old), It grows very slow on Window sills, I will put it in car green house, If it response well, I will root cuttings.

We are definitely on the same wave length!! I have 20 acres and was thinking about going to the local junk yard and have them tow an old school bus on my land to use for green house. My wife would have fun painting it in a 70's hippie theme.

Wow, you have 20 acres, You can grows many fruit trees.
Finally, I put up a cheap small green house with 2mi plastic, real green house seem heat up so high under Sun, but car green house regulated heat better and warmer at night, not really sure which one better.

Please Help, What temperature is too high for fig trees?

This is my favorite thread in a while!  There should be testing by all the auto manufacturers so we know which make and models perform best as greenhouses....the best performance might get a lot of sales from our forum members :)

It is not hard to tell which car better for greenhouse, Just like Sun room, more windows area, more sun power, warmer.  Car keep/hold heat better than smaller plastic green house at night, Due to less heat loss, I can use a 100W light bulb with Thermostat to keep them growing till Xmas here.

Anyway, I put some newly rooted flower seeding/rooted pumkin seeding in both car green house and thin plastic green house, after one month, I can tell which one better.

I do not have Sunroom, I do not have window sill facing sun.
This is crazy weather recently, all spring plants come late.
unheated Car green house works very well for me.
Please do not buy those plastic green house, after 1 month, plastic breaking, it won't last for 1 season.

Both green house work very well, Our outdoor Day high temperature is 11C ( 52F) with few hours sunny break per week,  all potted fig trees with new leaves, and pumpkin seed sprout.

our outdoor fig trees like this.

Hi,
Glasses of the car will cut some wave length that are useful to the plants.
In the car, you could cook the leaves or the cuttings.
I'd rather use old windows from a house or a plastic sheet ...
Good luck !

I think that I like car green house more than those green Plastic green house.
Car green house hold and regular temperature better than plastic green house, Potted fig tree in green plastic green house, Their leaves are pale green/brown, not as healthy as car green house.
Plastic green house, When under noon sun now, Temperature can shoot up to 45C (  113F), which worry me.

You are right that it is better to use old windows or plastic sheets to build a green house, I am trying to collect some cheap glass to build one.
