Caralheto - Lungo del Portogallo

I received this fig from a friend in the North of Portugal.
Over there they call it Bêbera do Gêres, but after talking to Francisco he thinks it's probably a variety better known as Caralheto (they still sell it in some nurseries - Viveiros Valter)

After some search i believe this portuguese variety can also been found under the name Lungo del Portogallo.

Here's some photos of the first couple of figs my young tree produced...

In May

In June 23

After a couple of days of heavy rain they started to split, so i was forced to collect them (they would still need at least a week to be fully ripe)

They were good, but the 'green' was present in the flavor. I wonder how they would taste fully matured. If they sell it in some nurseries (with all the choice we have) it should be quite good.

I kept one and after a couple of days the flavour improved a lot (i know that figs don't mature once picked, but in this case it helped).

I mixed it with other brebas and they made a nice afternoon treat with some greek yogurt.

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing.... I have a Lungo Del Portogallo rooted cutting growing since spring so, with any luck, I may have the opportunity to taste the fruit some time next year...

Jaime,

Great pics. A couple of those would make a great snack. I'm sure
you enjoyed every spoonful.

Jamie, this is another one of your beautiful figs!

Lungo del Portogallo is a popular fig in Italy and as the name implies came from Portugal.  Its nice to know original name.

Do you think this fig gets darker skin the farther south its grown?

Thanks for your comments.

Tony,
Good luck with your tree. You should have some brebas next year.

Ray,
They were great. I mixed a couple of other Brebas (Lampa Preta and Negronne) and the mixed flavors combined perfectly.

Pino,
I believe that if the zone has enough heat and sun they can get quite dark. If mine stayed in the tree one more week they should be almost black on the sun side.

In the North, from where my cuttings come, they look like this (it's quite a large fig when the tree is more mature - that's a normal sized chicken egg)

My  [-1iq2C0qSZ8]  [WWk7Jv8ZbkA]   Lungo del Portogallo.

Nice figs Jaime !
A fig with many names  ... and codes... even in Switzerland  (?)  .. Peretta ! .. Gustissimo.. and more - (uma data de trafulhas!)
One day I shall suggest a trade with you for this one !!

Francisco

Nice figs, Vladis.

Francisco,
We have already discussed this scam of registering well known varieties of figs as "new" developments. That practice by Lubera is reprehensible and dishonest (and they even have the gall of registering the trademark on the new made up names).

Regarding this variety, you know that you just have to ask. I will start an air layer for you.

Thank you Jaime for your kind offer.
was  recently invited by a friend I had lost contact with, over 20 yr ago,  to visit his father's place where he has a few old trees to graft on,  a few more fancy varieties.. Apparently he also needs help on identification of a couple of old figs.
Think there will be a chance for new (forgotten!) figs .. will keep you updated.

Francisco

That's very exciting news, Francisco. Be sure to keep me updated.

Today, at work, i talked to a colleague whose fathers live in Algarve. She told me that he has 3 varieties of figs of very good quality - 1 green fig she could not name, a black one that seemed very similar to Lampa Preta, by her description, and another black one - Figo da Mina, that she says his her sister favorite.
It immediately got me thinking about the 2 cuttings of this variety you sent me. I have to recheck the one that was rooting (but it was doing fine the last time i noticed it - so many cuttings to keep track, this year, that it's hard to remember them all).
But i grafted the other one and it's growing very well. Hopefully, i can expect a few figs from this graft, next year.

I will certainly keep you updated
Fd'M has a few synonyms and it's a very nice and tasty fig. It's a Common so no need for wasps.
Not exactly 'black' ... I would say  'tinted' !
It pays to graft a couple of buds.. just in case ..and Fd'M also has a reputation of being stubborn to root
