Where is a good place to get a decent t-8 setup?

If you could come up with a gopher killing plant, you would have my interest!

If you want to go fancy you can get a 4 or 6 bulb unit online ($60 - 150).  I go to Walmart and get the Lights of America shop light.  It holds 2 T8 tubes for $10.97.  I get the tubes from Home Depot.  I started with 5000K tubes but these have become so popular that the 10 pack costs $10 more than the other colors.   So now I get 6500K and 3000K tubes.  They cost $3.30 each when bought in a ten pack.  I put 1 of each in every fixture, always blue (6500K) on the right so each plant gets lots of both ends of the spectrum.  I've used them over 1 year and moved 1800 mi and haven't had a single failure yet.  I had to buy several new ones because I no longer have enough sun for my citrus.

Added - At this time I don't think the T5s are worth the extra cost but if money's not an issue or you're just getting a few, they are better.

Ed, my t8s are just the 4' shop lights from Lowes ($12) with the 5k bulbs ($7 for 2)

Suz, I've got a couple of kingsnakes that will be laying eggs this summer.  ;-)

Ed, I got my four sets of T-5 lights at Home Depot

Mike, how many bulbs and how much $?

Lowe's here doesn't have any 4' T8 fixtures under $50. Are you using a shorter one or does my Lowes suck?   :)

I bet they do.  They're very standard I've purchased them at 5 different Lowe's in 3 states.  Just ask them for standard 4' shop lights.

Thanks Greg! The sundews arrived today in great shape. Here they are in terrarium I put together for them. Ready for portable gnat capture.

Nice, they look great!  Keep us posted.

Does the black thing on the top of that jar open?  If so, where did you get it?

Yes the black thing opens, it is just a rubber stopper and the jar is a one gallon jar from one of the big box stores. I cut the the center of the handle out to provide a small opening that I could easily open and close to let gnats, etc in but keep the humidity up.
I used a carbide hole saw that I had for tile to make the hole. It is a bit rough, but no sharp edges and functional. This picture is of the opening.

That's brilliant.  I need these in square shapes.  Also don't let them get too hot or you'll cook those sundews in short order!

Greg,

I received mine in the mail today in great shape too, thanks.  How hot is too hot?

In my opinion anything over 90f is too hot.

1 large available after a cancellation

also 6 smalls left.

Greg,

I would take 1 large and two smalls if still available. Please send Paypal.

Thanks,

Steve

Greg,

I saw your Paypal in an earlier post and made payment. Thanks,

Steve

Can these plants handle fruit flies or are they too big?

yeah they can handle fruit flies and even full size house flies no sweat

If we can only cross a carnivorous plant with a fig tree so it eats all the critters enticed to the figs but then it would probably just eat it's own figs when they ripen leaving us figless still.
