Catalina island

[FP551-01]

Yes I  have been there ,and can say the climate is ,perfect for ,growing fig trees.

Beautiful

I've been scuba diving near there but never on the land.  Any figs still there?

I have been scuba diving near the Catalina too! A beautiful coastal area but I have not seen the figs on the land. Jon, do you know the location of the trees if they are still there?

Cool postcard. I love old California stuff.

Probably not. That was almost 90 years ago, and I'd guess flat land like that would have been built upon long ago.

I found an old newspaper that mentioned the fig orchard, but only in passing. No real information.

Not only figs, but 'the boys of summer' (not the dodgers):

Quote:
The Cubs trained on Catalina every spring from 1921-1941, and from 1946-51. (The island was controlled by the U.S. military during the war years.) An amazing array of baseball stars spent their springs in the bucolic setting, including Charlie Root, Phil Cavaretta, Charlie Grimm and Hall of Famers Rogers Hornsby, Dizzy Dean, Gabby Hartnett, Joe McCarthy,Grover Cleveland Alexander and Hack Wilson, ...

Very nice Island, thanks for sharing.

Found this pix, and couldn't resist. The one time I was on Catalina, I wasn't looking for figs.

I was there three years ago at one of the Boy Scout summer camps operated on the island and hiked around maybe 10 miles and didn't see any signs of any sort of fruit tree at all, though that only covered a small part of the island.  Yeah, I can't imagine that valuable real estate has left any fig orchards remaining.

As a Brit my travels to the USA were in the early 1980's.........and I even had lunch on this lovely Island.Good memories.

Very cool pics.  =)

Oh! I just went to Catalina Island last month and was keeping an eye out for figs! Unfortunately I was only there for one day had to stay on the main touristy beach area & side streets - but I did find this little friend growing between two huge palms in a 4' tall brick planter! Is it a fig? Probably not a distant cousin of those orchard figs in the old photos but what could it be? (And sorry for the blurry, sideways pic!)
