Celeste Fig Growth Habit

As I watch my tree grow and develop I noticed the new tiny fruit starts out on the purple side then changes to green.  Well, I am assuming that since I see some small purple figs at the ends of the branches while the older ones are larger and green.

I've seen some pictures of beautiful trees from some members here and there are 2 figs at the base of the leaf - is this a trait of a particular cultivar? age of the tree? Luck?

As the tree grows throughout the season, will it bear more fruit with the new growth?

The amount of knowledge about fig trees I do not have is quite extensive!  Thank you to everyone here for the tips and pictures!!

Jo-Ann  :)

Any additional info on Celeste?  How big can they get, size and taste of the fruit, etc?  I have several rooted cuttings and a couple now in pots that are doing just great since our weather warmed up.  Trying to decide how many I should keep and how many to give away.

Thanks

Here is about all the info one could ask for (link attached)

Thanks, Noss.

We are starting over at our new place.   I have  ten or twelve cultivers that are  new  to me, (several of which are "unknowns"),  and am in the process of figuring which to put where.   Twelve will go or are allready into the fig hedge, which leaves 4 or 5 spots for single trees which I will allow to grow larger.

Decisions, decisions.....   :-)

Noss,

I put my area and zone in the profile - do I have to put it in with each post for it to come up?  I will with this post.

Yes, it is putting out fruit with new growth - will it continue throughout the season?

What about those with 2 fruits at the base of a leaf?  Is this characteristic of a particular variety? Age?  Luck??

The tree gets about 8 hours of sun from about 7am (still sleeping so I'm not totally sure :) )  till about 3-3:30 in the afternoon.

I've taken pictures but I've had some problems uploading to photobucket.

@JoAnn,

I'm not Noss but I will dry to answer your profile ? open your profile, go look on the far left bottom for "signature"  type all the info in that thing and then save it!

Then when you post a thread Etc, it will automatically insert it for Ya

Also you can find all kinds of Celeste & just about every other named fig on this forum's owner''s website link below...hope this helps

I've got so many Celeste nearby I don't grow any in my collection.  I wish I'd seen any of them bud fruit at this point.

@Dave, for Celeste around here, the body of the fruit is usually between the size of a nickel and a quarter, typically closer to a quarter with a typically long skinny neck, very teardrop shaped overall.  Usually a dark pinkish tan inside, sometimes reddish brown.  Skin is prone to cracking when ripe, and they'll stay on the tree till they either dry out or rot.  In-ground trees here typically get up to 20' tall and 20' wide and keep a great form.  Well-ripened fruit has a good sweet, almost brown sugar taste, and I'd give the fig itself a solid 6/10.  If you dry them in a dehumidifier, I give them an 8½/10, getting the water out of them amplifies the sugary richness to a point just shy of light molasses mixed with maple syrup.  On some strains, younger trees are prone to fruit drop, but this is reportedly not an issue after ~4-5 years in-ground, after being well established and/or in areas where incredibly intense heat isn't a factor .

@ JoAnn

JoAnn, You don't need to upload photos to photo-bucket to post them here

After I load my photos to my computer I right click them and re size them to 800x600 (I have XP Pro, your OS might be different if it is you should be able to google re-size photos for your OS, then go to manage images at the bottom of the message box and search for the re sized photos and upload them>>   Or you can ask Satellitehead for help he is a whole lot more knowledgeable that I am on this subject!(or most any other subject as far as that goes)
EDIT> Here is a very helpful link

I hope I have not confused you more!   Good luck (after you post a photo a time or two it is as easy as falling off a greased ] log (so to speak)

This is a branch on my Celeste.

This is my Celeste fig, about 10 years old.

Nice looking tree there Chapman.

I made a cutting about 25 years ago from a old tree at my great-grandparents home in SW Louisiana. It was an old tree probably 60 plus years old.  The old tree later died .   From my original cutting I made about 10 more trees  and brought 2 to my new home about 10 years ago.  I have been rooting cuttings again the last 2 years using tips from this site.
As far as I can tell the trees do not drop their fruit and produces a good crop every year.  I don't allow them to get too dry  and water it  during dry periods and fertilize once a year in late winter.

Ok - thanks for all of the info!!  I edited my sig. - let's see if it works.

Was out with the tree a while ago and a few leaves have 2 figs at the base-- Woohooo!!

I have windows Vista - to resize photos I have to email !?  Weird.

Celeste crop - thats 4-6 weeks away!   Will the tree put out much new growth after the main crop?  Will it always have figlets with new leaves?

Thanks everyone

That is a very nice healthy looking tree Chapman.

Jo-Ann- It takes only a few button pushes on a camera to change the image size, before you take the picture. What do you or I need a 12 MP master image for anyway? It also allows you to store more photos and shoot faster, and the batteries last longer. I had about a hundred of photo to resize for school once and NEVER AGAIN will I use an image size that is higher quality than I need. I could have avoided hours of tedious work just by changing my camera settings once.

Brent - your a genius!!  I never think about the camera settings - I will do that now.  Thanks!!

Get ready for some pictures!

Here's a couple of pictures of the little purple figs.  Sorry about the size - I changed the settings on the camera, so all new ones should be good
