Celeste taste likes Peach

I don't recall reading about Celeste tasting anything other than sweet, figgy, honey tasting.

This Celeste I purchased from Lowes in Austin, TX tastes like peaches, and it's not overly sweet, I'd say just slightly more sweet than the Black Missions I have got from the grocery store.

But after 10 figs the taste is still the same, and my wife is the one who pointed this out to me, and as usual, she's right.

Anyone else have a Celeste with other fruit flavors? 073.JPG

Tasting like peaches is a good thing right?

Don,

Well isn't that interesting.  Forum member Blueboy1977 is a friend and while he and his wife were house hunting they looked at a house that was not currently occupied and in the backyard was a  fig tree with ripe figs on it.  Being curious they tried it and both he and his wife said it tasted just like a very good peach.  He "borrowed" a few cuttings and I know he has sent out a few to people including me.   Blueboy lives in Texas as well, Seabrook, SE of Houston I believe, though I am not sure if that is where the tree was.   Wonder if the tree you have and his is the same?   I will send the thread link to him and see if he recognizes the leaf as the same as the tree they saw.  I think he sent me 6 cuttings all of which took.  I planted one and labeled it Texas peach unknown and sent friends the other 5 1 gallons.

You maybe on to something Wills! I don't remember the exact leaf shape but I have 2 of the cuttings growing right now in the back yard. The leafs may not be what the dominate leaf pattern will be but I will take a pic and let y'all decide. It's quite possible that this variety is a Celeste with a peach taste. It was undeniable when me and my wife tasted it. I couldn't figure out if it was a peach or apricot flavor, but it was there none the less.

Here are some pics of the leafs I just took. This plant is only this years rooted cutting so leafs may not be mature yet.

Do y'all see any resemblance at all? Mine is a unknown but looks a lot like Celeste now after seeing all the photos on this forum the last year or so.

I'll be honest and say I have never tasted a Celeste fig until I tasted mine.  But from peoples descriptions of "so sugary sweet", mine is not, unless someone thinks peaches taste sugary sweet.

Yeah, I think it's a good thing, but I'm rarely that lucky to just buy something cool and not know it.  It is a keeper for sure.  My wife said "and this one (Celeste) isn't supposed to be as tasty as these" (pointing at other figs from cuttings, VdB, Smith, etc).  We are both very happy with it's taste.

I like the name Texas Peach.  There are more figs yet to ripen, I hope it stays consistent.

Blueboy and WillsC, glad to hear someone else has had similar experience so I'm not "crazy".  I think the leaves on yours is similar, especially the new ones.

Don,

Here is mine.  Blueboy sent me cuttings this winter and it has grown very well, even has a few figs on it.

Well, this gives me some hope. I recieved cuttings last year from someone of a "Improved Celeste". The leaves have never really satisfied my impression of what they should look like, I was expecting the 1-3 lobe. This year, they look exactly like the leaves on your tree Wills. So this could be great, who doesn't love peaches?

I have a tree (purchased from a nursery and gifted by my wife) that is labeled Brown Turkey, but after posting pictures of fruit and leaves on the forum a year or two ago, people have suggested that it is really some type of Celeste.  I also don't know what a Celeste is "supposed to taste like," but this one has berry, strawberry and watermelon notes (along with a hint of honey.)
The tree still has the tag -- Greenleaf Nursery, Tarboro NC.  According to their website, Greenleaf sells Brown Turkey, Celeste, Black Italian, and LSU Purple.  So, it is very likely a celeste mistagged as a brown turkey.
Jim

My Celeste last year started out with a peach flavor with sometimes more of a melon hint to it.  Later in the season it started tasting more berry jam type of taste.  With all the rain last year though sometimes it just tasted kind of like sugar water with very little flavor.

Don: Very nice and thanks for sharing.

Best,
Tam

I had a co-worker bring me some figs from her tree today. It was a celeste from what I could identify. Another co-worker wanted to try one as she had never had a fresh fig. And what were her words??? It tastes like a peach and honey. I immediately thought about this post!
