Celeste vs BT question

One of the distinguishing features of the Celeste and Brown Turkey is the timing of the eye color change.

What kind of timeline do you see with this?  In other words, how many days before ripe do you see the eye turn red/pink with the Celeste?  And how many for the BT?

Thanks!

hi, Laura

It's easier than that. With BT, the eye(ostiole) becomes a bright pink/red when the fruit is about the size of a large marble ans still very green. With Celeste (closed ostiole), this does not really happen at any point. You may notice a little pink once the fruit is ripe/ripening. Hope this helps!

I moved into a house in Georgia (where everybody has a "Brown Turkey") This tree fits the general leaf and fruit profile of a BT.  The eye turned pink about a week before the rest of the fig showed any sign of darkening, and when pretty much full size.

Then somebody tried to convince me it was a Celeste.

Sorry, no pics. :(

Any thoughts based on this?

Also, a more interesting story about this fig is that it ripened 20-30 figs on a very small tree in ground, while receiving no direct sunlight, covered by a canopy of huge pine trees.  I could stay beside this tree all day and never tan or burn. (My fair skin usually burns in 10-15 min or less in full sun.)

It is probably a Brown Turkey. The late coloring of the eye may be due to the low light level. I am guessing though, much better to see pictures.

Solid in the middle or is there a cavity?

Fruit size should be the single biggest indicator.  BT fruit is 2x-3x as large as Celeste.  Celeste fruit is larger than a quarter but smaller than a silver dollar.  BT is at least as large as a golf ball, but more often closer to the size of a racquetball.

Do not judge based on leaves.  Leaves change shape, and Celeste varieties have several leaf shapes.
