CHICAGO HARDY FIG FRUIT TREE SEEDS ???

Hardy Chicago is common fig. meaning, that they do not need to be pollinated to produce edible figs. also, in NJ, there are not fig wasps.. meaning, those seeds are not fertile. unless of course, it's been manually pollinated.

But if someone in So Cal or the Middle East had a HC it could have viable seeds.

Are these people fleecing?

IMO, yes.  Even if the seeds are fertile, fig seeds do not match the cultivar of either of their parents, and might not even produce fig trees that are common figs.  Someone should report this to ebay... it is misrepresentation and misleading.  (I don't know how to report a seller to ebay).

OK, I just tried reporting it, and hit a dead end in ebay's "report an item" form.  It has canned reasons (a predefined selection list), and I couldn't find one that fit.  I gave up on reporting it to ebay.  Instead informed the seller.

These guys are making money off of worthless seeds from trees that should be grafted. Nothing they sell is of any real value except maybe the cotton and pepper seeds, but I wouldn't trust anything they sell, especially their Rainbow Rose seeds! I think every morning they eat their breakfast and sell the seeds that afternoon.

The "Rainbow Roses" don't grow with all the colors they show, nor do they explain that. The way the different colors are made is by splitting the stems of a solid color rose, guessing a white rose, and dipping each split section of the stem in different dyed water. The dye is absorbed into the petals creating the multi colored affect. Who ever buys the seeds will be disappointed when the roses bloom. Seems they're a bit deceptive. Who knows, maybe they're a spin off of Ty Ty Gardens. I would stay away from them.

When I was about 8 years old, I sent away for "Sea Monkey" eggs.  I thought that I would eventually have  a pet that would sit on my shoulder and eat bananas.  Instead, what I got was an education.  I learned what it feels like to be made into a first-class sucker.  It was the first layer of the coating of cynicism that I wear so proudly.

"Hope and Change"...should be on the same page as the "Hardy Chicago" seeds.  Both products are the same.

Frank....oops!....my cynicism is showing.

Those were the days. We were 'sucked in' Australia also...

Not sure why I bothered, but on the chance that they're honest people I had the following correspondence with them.  If they don't remove their auctions, someone can report them to ebay as fraudulent.  (Bugs me that I couldn't figure out an easy way to report them to ebay when I tried).

Dear meyer_garden_supply,

Here is a very accessible and readable article about figs, which covers the four basic types of Ficus carica (Smyrna type, Caprifig, San Pedro, and Common). This article is from the California Rare Fruit Growers association.

There are many scholarly articles that will confirm what I have told you. Chicago Hardy is one of the "Common" types, by the way. The same is true of Celeste and the other kinds that I see you are saying that you sell seeds for on ebay. I'd encourage you to remove your auctions for "fig seeds", as they are not (and cannot be) true to type. (And worse, they are sterile seeds and will not germinate, unless you are either hand pollinating or have imported some Blastophaga psenes, the fig wasp).

I would encourage you to remove all of your auctions for "fig seeds". However, if you wish to honestly offer for sale a product that WILL allow people to propagate these fig types that you're selling, you could offer cuttings. Cuttings (and other clonal propagation techniques) are the only way to produce new fig trees that are true to type. You will find that there are many people willing to buy cuttings of fig trees.

Sincerely, Mike

Dear meyer_garden_supply,

Are you aware that fig seeds are not "true to type"? Fig seeds will not produce trees that are of the same variety as either of their parents. And if you are doing this without having a caprifig tree available and hand pollinating, then odds are that the seeds are infertile and will not germinate. Figs are an unusual tree, and Hardy Chicago does not require pollination to produce ripe fruits, but in order to produce any fertile seeds they do require pollination from a caprifig either by the fig wasp (which doesn't live in NJ) or hand pollination. Even if you you do all of this, the seeds produced will not produce trees that are of the type Chicago Hardy. Are you aware of this/

Now it's BT "seeds" from PA. No fig wasp there either.

Ebay has no way to rate a seed seller b/c the feedback period is too short.

Milehighgirl the best way is what you done - bring up topic to forum , most know about fig seeds but
folks joining forum and just getting into figs may not and they can learn from that.

For others i would not bother much with trying to contact these type of sellers its mostly "fruitless" no pun intended.
