chicago hardy, mini apple & giant hornet

all good for health? :-)

fig and apple made my mouth water.

hornet made cold sweat running down my back.

asian GIANT hornet is a real monster.

as a bee keeper, it’s a nightmare in broad daylight.

to bees, it’s a apocalyptic disaster:-(

3-4 hornet can destroy a whole bee colony in a day.

I’ve caught some and poured 40% vodka.

Just seeing those things makes my skin crawl. I didn't know they would go after bees.

Wow how do you catch them?

Giant hornets are no joke.  They are deadly and deserve the highest order or respect.

Here is a link to google imiges.

Brahms74 - I see that you are located in South Korea.  I assume these are the same giant hornets that they have in Japan.

my best/familiar weapon is my old slipper.

1. slash

2. pick with long nippers very carefully

3. place in a freezer at least 10 minutes + confirm a death

4. removing dirts, wash with clean water and diving into a vodka.

in north-east Asia, bee keeper's no.1 headache is not a mite or agricultural chemicals. These giant hornet literally destroy a whole bee colony like a morning warm up or a hobby. a heavenly disaster. Hornets also destroy figs and many other fruits. catching a hornet with my old ragged slipper is a thrill:-) what a adrenalin flowing. but I can say definitely- it's not a safe way. no recommendable. making hornet vodka is a personal revenge for my poor honey bees.

p.s. yes bob:-) same species.  but some entomologists says there is 3-4 subspecies

Do you need the hornets to be intact to make the vodka? Or do people use squashed ones?

various types exist. to me, intact one is better for a eye pleasure:-) it leach anyway-

some people use these hornet vodka for medical purpose(mainly for high blood pressure problems) but- I do not use:-( I use this as a holiday gift for my elder friends.

That is so cool. What does it taste like?

Why do the hornets kill the bees?  Is it a territorial thing or do they eat them?

It taste like a toxic beverage :-) just a kidding:-) one of my friends who has a sensitive palate and sharp nose told to me that "It taste like a honey and surely has a floral scent" uhmm.. I think it's a quite rational opinion cause these giant hornet eats honey eating honey bee.

connections between hornets and bees are just like lions and zebras. zebra eats grass, lion eats zebra. so, honey bee eats honey, hornet eats honey bee. what a nature.
