Chris' Purple Portuguese. Cuttings received on 5 February 2010. There was only one possibility to sample a main crop fig and it fell off today. I was not expecting much and did not get much. Here is the little I experienced: CPP is very dark, seedy with a prominent crunch. It hints that it might be berry sweet when we taste a fully mature, ripe fig but I am not certain because it tasted like low sugar fruit-flavored water. Correction: Received on 2/5/10 not 2/5/11.

Not bad for a tree that's not even a year old. Give it time to mature, I think you will like it. It does have a sweet berry flavor when older.

Sue - Good catch. That date is a typo...I changed it. And thanks for the cuttings. This fig is the darkest that has fruited for me. Next season I trust it will be better tasting and more productive.

Jimmie, I continue to be amazed with your large and rare collection. We are in November and you are still pulling figs off your trees.

My only superstars continues to be the petit negri and green ischia although the taste is nowhere as good as in the summer.

Frank, Thanks for the encomium. I take no credit other than being a shepherd. I also say THANKS to the members of this forum for any apparent rarity or presumed size of my collection. When Sue shared cuttings of Chico Strawberry, she tossed in a few of Chris' Purple Portuguese. Who would have thought that of those cuttings she sent me almost two years ago, all seven would still be growing today?

I still have more 100+ green figs on my trees. I am debating about knocking them all off before first frost or leaving them on through overwintering in the garage to see if they ripen in the spring.

I just prepared a nice location for a pineapple guava hedge. They are quite tasty. You will not be disappointed with the LSU Imporved Celeste. It is very good.

This has been an interesting year for growing but then every year is new with joys and challenges.

When I was you, I brought the figs into the garage. Last winter was the first winter for my figs and I brought all of my immature potted figs into an unheated garage. It was after first frost and before the freezing temperatures were here to stay. Initially I took them in and out when the temps dropped below freezing at night got up to 50-60 during the day. I did not have the time to maintain that fig shuffle so I left them outside until the day time highs were just about 40. They stayed in the garage until early Spring and the daily highs averaged at least 45-50.
