I been thinking about rooting some fig cuttings using this method for a while now but have not had anytime to try it. I have some of the parts needed from an old aquarium i have somewhere, just wanted to know if anyone here had tried and how were the results. I googled Bubble cloner but seems 99% of the people doing this are using for illegal plats lol.

Hi Marting thanks for the links. I have a new Aquarium pump somewhere at my moms and and some bubble stones. I want to try doing this over the winter just to see how it works out. Dont really have to spend any money on this so its a bonus.

im just curious what do you feed the roots or do you and is this container kept in daylight also after the roots grow to what you want them to do you just stcik the plant in potting soil and put in shade.?

Ok here are some of the things I have read wich differ from poster to poster so its hard to get an exact diy but it will give you an Idea.

Lighting:
 
20W florescent Light or less about 1ft above cuttings

Water:
 
Usually regular tap water. Distiled water is also used but they usually add some type of liquid nutrients to it. Some also change the water after 7 days.

Tub:
 
The water area should not be clear because light will kill the roots and will cause it to grow algae. So either paint the tub black of get a white or coloured Tub or Coffee container etc.

Temperature:

Somepeople use a heating mat under the Tub or a aquarium tank heater and try to keep the water in the 50-80 F range depending on the person some people dont use either one as long as the room its in is in that temperature range.

Another thing I have read and allot of people are arguing about this is the tips of the cuttings do you submerge them in the water or above.

Some people say submerge atleast 1/2" Under water why others say to have it about 1/4" above the water so that when you turn on the bubbles the bubbles break on the tip of the cutting and force it to root faster. Apparently either way works some people clain Success either way.

Interesting i had most of the items in the past but sold it all as one .
I used to have a 55 gallon aquarium with a 2 tube underground gravel filters fixed with high flow powerheads on top each tube, a dynaflo outside filter which was a real dinosaur but worked excellent another outside wheel type filter 2 long stick bubblers, the overhead light and a large tank heater, water was always sparkly.
I remember i used to dump about a third of the water out onto the grass near patio and that patch always was nice and green and grew faster than the other parts now that i think about it.
After 18 years FRED the family Fire Tail eel finally died, kids cried i felt like crap as he used to eat the frozen brine right out of our hands.

Sorry to hear about your eel, I know how it is to get attached to animals and its never easy to let go. I have everything I need exept the container least of my worries will try to do this over the winter and will take pics at the time. Probably try with some brown turkey cuttings since its growing like a weed.

Nelson, I've used a bubbler cloner to root plants. Sometimes it worked well, and sometimes a slimy bacteria would grow. I found that it was good to move the cuttings to a solid medium as soon as roots started, because water roots are different that soil roots. It works great for elderberries.

lmao Mike i seen that episode too think on sunday on spike.

I started to experiment this season, but didn't have time to really give it a proper trial. Just a plastic box, aquarium heater and an air stone. Hopefully I will get to play again next season. I know of people using it to root things other than figs. No reason why it shouldn't work, if everything is balanced out.

I think so too as long as the conditions are right im pretty confident that it would work the only thing im confused about is timing how long of a period would I leave the bubbler on & off for. I read some of the Illegal growers sometimes split the tip of the cutting and say it somehow roots a bit faster wonder if it would be the same for a fig cutting. My uncle is supposed to bring me back some cuttings from Madeira Island but Im not sure I want to experiment with those thats if they dont get taken at the border.

Send me all you Mderia cuttings and i will root them and grow em into plants i will even tell you how the figs taste!  ; )

I tried this last spring.  I procured cuttings from various sources and set up an online purchased bubble cloning box.  (I didn't like the air-stone which came with it and went to a local hydroponics store and got a 14 inch one)

I also, at the same time set up a box for rooting traditionally, in perlite as I have done for the last couple years.

Both boxes included bottom heat.  Under the cloning box for and under the rooting cups in the second one.  The water did stay lukewarm from the set-up.

I had some of the cuttings extended down into the water and others sitting 1/2-1 inch above the water.  Cuttings were in hard mesh baskets (with holes added) containing haydite (I think that 's what its called) and expanded clay balls.

Every single one of the cuttings in the cloning box rotted.  A couple formed initials before rotting, but not a single root was ever seen.  The traditionally rooted plants gave me a roughly 66% success rate. (which is fairly typical for me given the rates I have had in the past.

Martin im not sure what varieties he will be able to get , I just found out there are atleast 10+ fig trees in our town its a small town so we will see Its fig season over there right now so I told him to take pics of the figs and leaves and label the cuttings. But im worried a bit cause hes a chicken $4it.
