Clone your cuttings & never see gnats!

Thanks, Aporto!  Great info!  I had to rescue my cuttings and am now growing in bags. I'm sure I can go back to the cloner at some point.  However, as a newbie, I don't want to take the chance now with cuttings that are so precious to me.

I wonder if it is a matter of concentration?  I mixed up some HTH to the supposed same concentration as Clear-Rez.  When I added it to my cloner at the recommended 1oz / 5 gallons, it did not even register on my pool test kit.  Previously I had been using 0.5 ppm and saw the same browning of the roots.  Right now I have some Avocado cuttings in the cloner and there are no roots yet.  They do feel slightly slimy though, so I will see if the low concentration HTH keeps it in check.

Doug: This may be a silly question but how do you use the cloner for tomatoes?

James:  I'm sorry you have lost cuttings to the cloner.  I am sure I lost several...they went to mush also.  However, I am an optimist so I believe that when I put them into the bag, they will return to life! :-D  I'm still waiting for a sign of life...

 Meg,

As I posted over on the dark side,   acting on the counsel of DanW, to never throw away a cutting until it is a hardened, black lump of coal, or a blob of gooey amber mess... I have a little 1.5 inch long CdD-Noir cutting that is less than a pencil diameter that is clinging to life after having been cut back three times due to rot in the aeroponic cloner. There are a dozen more cuttings that look dried out, but show no other outward signs that they have passed through the veil into the after life. So, what to do with these, until there is a certainty that no life remains in them? ....Being that I am a registered nurse for 650 inmates at a correctional facility, I thought it poetic that tonight I created a Death Row for cuttings, serving out their final days upon this earth. I simply gathered them from all of the assorted rooting bins and formed a single row within one 27 gal bin, of these lost souls.

Please pray for the poor cuttings that get sent to Blue's house... for many it will be a death sentence! LOL!!!

DanW, your post got me thinking and made me do more research and now I am more confused than ever.  I added the HTH in the hopes of replicating City water, as I am sure many city folk are successfully growing plants using chlorinated tap.  I found this regarding CL levels in drinking water:

EPA Regulation of Chlorine in Drinking Water

The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, regulates the amounts of contaminants in water.  While chlorine is added to the water, it is still considered a contaminant.  The EPA allows up to 4 ppm of chlorine in drinking water.  Did you know that chlorine levels in pools are supposed to be kept between 1.0 ppm and 3.0 ppm to maintain a healthy pool?  It is interesting that pool water chlorine is kept lower so that skin or eyes won’t burn or itch, but drinking water is up to 4 ppm.

So at .5-1 PPM, I was in the lower region of city water, but still brown, burnt roots.  Oddly, new, healthy roots are now appearing throughout the burnt ones in the same chlorinated water and there was no visible effect on the topside of the plants.  I think the issue may have been the shock (pool pun?) of introducing the CL to a plant that was not used to it and not the actual level of CL at all?  So maybe the lesson is to introduce changes of any kind very slowly.  Kind of like taking off the humidity dome for a few minutes per day before removing a plant from that environment.

My 2nd run is going much better.  This time I left out the nutrient solution, opting for just straight tap water with a little rooting gel on the cuttings.  Here are some pics from last night after 1 week in the cloner:

Smyfigs, I used a rockwool cube in the net cup.

Interesting theory.  It is true that each time I added various forms of chlorine and had the roots turn brown, there was a very low level of chlorine prior to the addition.  But if the shock theory is correct, then someone on city water who does not change the water for quite a while and has the chlorine all dissipate or get consumed then gets a bunch of nice white roots should also experience the browning if they change their water and use fresh new city chlorinated water.  I am on a well so any chlorine is my own doing.  I will see how these avocados do with the recommended additions of HTH used as clear-rez.

Week 6 . Just rinsed and reset the cloner. Good roots and shoots all around. I actually cut many roots off at 6", as I don't like them dangling in the water.

Looks great! Keep doing what you are doing.

Wow James - those look amazing for one week. I also just changed out my water and am going 100% H20 , removing the nutrient solution. Hoping the results will be better.

What are your water temps looking like?

Thanks, Matt.  The temp is in the low/mid 70's.

I hope someone can talk me off the bridge right now, hopefully Dennis can chime in with all his expertise ;) Or others who have experience similar to the pictures below.

I am 1 day short of 3 weeks in the cloner and still have no roots growing but a good amount of leaf growth going for almost all the cuttings. I'm just getting nervous that i'm going to lose all that beautiful top growth due to no roots. I'm contemplating putting some of the cuttings into the coir bag method that worked well for me to save these cuttings. I have it on a timer 15on/15off, I'm keeping the lights on it 24/7 now until i get root growth, then will transition to 18on/6off.

Should i keep it in cloner???? It looks like i got a lot of root primordia on the cuttings - but they are browning. Not sure if thats providing nutrients to the foliage in the meantime.

Mine are having the opposite problem, either no activity of roots growing out of the tops and bottoms, but no leaves

My suggestion is you should bag them up and they will root very fast instead of soaking them in that water . Of course they will root in the cloner (50/50 chance) ---> they might also be rot being soaking way too long . That is my 2 cents

Those are lenticels, not roots with 1 possible exception that I can't see clearly.  There's one with what looks like mold or some kind of deposit.  Up top that long white thing may be a root, I can't tell.

Are you using any disinfectant?  Is the water slimy?  I'd get those cuttings out and into a method that's worked well for you but disinfect the bottoms first.  Try dabbing your disinfectant of choice on 1 lenticel first to see if it damages it.  If it does let them dry a little first so the lenticels recede before disinfecting.

Thanks Mai, holding off to do so till i hear from others who've been using this method to see if they had similar results and if i should jump ship now.

Bob - That is the only culprit left with the slimy stuff on it. What you see above on that cutting is the same as others, not a root.

The water is good, not slimy at all. All cuttings were cleaned with anti-bacterial soap prior to being in the cloner. I just dont want to jump ship if this is normal prior to roots starting.

Just leave them alone. They will root you guys have to learn patience. Leaf grow sometimes happens. Soon you will have rooted trees. Those young leaves will fall off and more will come. Just be patient.

Thanks Dennis for the reassurance, i was hoping you would talk me off the ledge. I will keep them in, these bulges (lenticils or primordia) look familiar to you?

Quick!!! 5ml per liter in your Reservour of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Keep your temps low. Put a frozen 2 liter bottle of water in there. 65degree water temps. Then, be patient. Should get better within the week..

Yes, looks normal to me.

Rick - i have 14 gallons of water, that would be ALOT of Hydrogen Peroxide ;) I was using hydrogen peroxide this whole time, i'm going to straight H20 right now to see how it does.

The water temp is around 71-72 degrees, which i read is a good spot to be at.

I will be patient though, thanks for advice :)

Seeing first roots in cloner (fig roots) and in damp moss boxes only 14 days.

Panachee first one to root in cloner nothing on any of the  rest yet but hoping they will start popping roots quickly.

Should I leave in cloner till roots get longer or can I take out now and start putting in cups?

I suspect you will see a considerable amount of visible growth for every 24 hours you leave them in

Ok guys, again, you're taking this hydrogen perioxide thing WAY too far. I go days and some months and don't add any. All I do is this......

1. Fill up the cloner with tap water
2. Plug in the pump.
3. Don't bother the cuttings for days.
4. Week 2 I add a half a teaspoon of HP.
5. Every third day, add a half a teaspoon of HP.

That is it!

Some cuttings will root in days, others will root is weeks....it really depends on the cutting's health and freshness. My cuttings are STILL in my cloner.

Here are mine a month a go and I know these plants have roots all the way down to the water. At this point they are ready to pot up and are being fed daily with the T5 lights running on a 8hr 24/7 timer.

Don't over think this.

With LOVE.

Cheers,
