I have been using an aquaponic cloner for two seasons now, there are a lot of kinks but it is a reliable method and I do recommend it. Don't dip the cuttings too deep or they will rot. Use the very tight collars, they hold the cutting more firmly and will better resist roots growing into the foam. I also recommend rooting in a cup of water, root initials will form much more consistently there, and then you can transfer the cutting into the cloner when initials appear. I find some cuttings simply will resist forming roots in the cloner, and the cup start will guarantee a near 100% success rate. Also, a humidity dome is helpful if it is a dry environment. The hard part is transplanting the cuttings after the roots are strong. I found that in the warm, summer months the transplants that I made did not even blink when they were transplanted. In colder months I have lost rooted cuttings in the transplant stage. I have posted a thread or two on this topic.
