Close spacing figs?

What's the closest spacing any of you do on your figs? I've done as close at 2.5' spacing on stone fruit and pomes, and am wondering how close I can plant figs and maintain them as small bushes or miniature trees? They will be in raised beds I'm building that will be 2' wide and variable in length. I am fine pruning every day during the summer to maintain dwarf trees.

Thank you!

It's a good question. From what I have heard from forum members you can go down to a 5 foot circle so long as you prune at least once a year to keep them around 5 foot tall.  I'm thinking it would be best to have the grow as bushes with 3-4 trunks.  I'm going to try this in an area of my backyard this Spring.  I would be interested to hear other opinions.

I have a Atreano, VDB and Panachee planted about five-six feet for each other. All pruned to about six feet high. I air layer any shoots and give them away. They are planted in an alternating line (like a z). Let's see how they fare this winter. I also have a Celeste, Negronne and Italian Red planted within five feet of each other in a straight line next to the house facing south. Also pruned to five-six feet. They produced very well last year. I used lots of lime. Fertilized with Miracle Grow several times during the summer.

mine are in pots, so i put them as close or as far apart as needed :)

Hi Tylt33,
it depends :)
It depends on the cultivar : Heavy grower or small grower.
Are you growing them / not waiting for fruit just green for cuttings ... Then anything starting with 20 cm is enough. As long as the leaves can get light .
For me , if it is for fruit production, 1,5 meters in between two trees is the minimum ... In natural light. If you go with artificial lighting ...
It depends as well on you climate. Here, the trees don't have time to ripe the fruit from a root sucker - even BT was not able.
Did I mention that 1.5 meter is what I do ...
But of course every tree is kept under 2 meters of height ... To be honest, the winters here help me in that ... a bit too much some years ...

I think I may do pots. We have a great climate here... The last frost is done by March/April, and we didn't have our first freeze until mid-December this year. With pots, I can experiment with spacing too...

My trees are on 15' spacing in a triangle formation. Where are you located?
