Col de dam noir

Hey everybody I have this tree an it is outgrowing the 20 gallon pot that it's in. I would like to plant it but I'm not sure it will survive 7a winter. I would winter protect it buy half burying it in mulch and placing a garbage can over it. Any thoughts appreciated

If you protect it well it will be just fine in zone 7,as mine is in zone 6b.
However you will have a hard time getting ripe fruits,if you do not plant it in full sun,i mean full 9 hours of sun or more!.

It takes a long growing season.  An alternative is to keep it in a pot but root prune it every other year and prune the tree to keep the size manageable.  That would let you move it in and out in the spring and fall to avoid frosts but gain some extra growing season.

If you had a grow room or greenhouse you could give it even more time to ripen its figs.  Keep it in a pot, let it sit in a garage not under 35 degrees, then bring it into your grow room in March.  Put it outside when lows stay above 60 and bring it in when temps stop getting over 78 or so in the fall so it can finish ripening all of its figs.

Ha I have a hard time getting any fruit from this thing. If it doesn't produce something soon it's about to get promoted to mulch. Thanks for feedback I don't have a greenhouse but I could bring I and out I guess but that's a killer on the back.

How old is your tree?  You should be able to get better than a 2" caliber trunk in a 20 gallon container.  Afterward, you can maintain the size by root pruning, as Ed mentioned.  As my plan stands now, I'm not planning on going bigger than a 15# Airpot... at least until I get to a 3" trunk.  We'll see how it goes from there.
