Col De Dame Blanc

Wonderful tree, such lovely photos, I really have to get a new camera... Thank you for sharing!

It seems like your tree is loving that shady foundation, from my knowledge they tend to like throwing their roots under their for the cool and nematode-free soil

Tam: The eye was tight on my first CDD ripe fig. But I noticed that some figs are deformed (Not symmetrical) as if they have a growth on one side. The tree is 5 month old and I'm not sure what to make out of it.Perhaps it's too early to tell. I'll have to give it a couple of years to really know if it is really healthy or not.
I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about the health of the mother tree at UCD.
Let's see how it does after the winter.

Gloria: I use my I5 Phone.

I just read an encouraging abstract of article about FMV:

http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1277072383&postcount=36

The act of splitting, happens to all cultivars in certain specific period of the year, and is hard to pinpoint why.
In my opinion.a relative warm day followed by a relative cold night,in the 40,will create conditions that the fruits will split.
All I can say,no cultivar is full proof,to splitting, but ,not all fruits ripe at once so,good healthy fruits can be had, after a period of splitting.

Tam, yesterday I had a chance to sample two more Col de Dame Blanc figs and they were outstanding with the consistency of flavor that one expects from a good fig. This is how they looked like:

Sas, your trees look wonderfully healthy.

And the fruit luscious.

I have a small yearling tree with still green fruits that should start ripening soon - especially in this heat. Must be close to 90 here today.

I received three cutting from UCD this year and two are doing great. So one went into the ground one is in a container and the third is still struggling.

The one that went into the ground was initially a 5 gallon pot that I cut the bottom off and inserted the whole thing into the ground and Irrigating it at 20 min per day with a two gallon per hour head.

The one that went into the ground is over three feet tall and the one that went into a self watering container is over 6 foot tall now growing into the sky.
I'll probably put this one into the ground too when it goes dormant. The three fig that I had so far are simply amazing!

I was worried about FMV but these two cuttings look like they're ok. As for the third one it's questionable.

Tam,

What’s the old saying…”a picture is worth a thousand words”?  Thanks for posting such beautiful and clear photos.  Very informative follow up reply’s to your post also.

I’ve read that, Col de Dame is highly regarded by many as one of the BEST tasting figs in the world.  Got my attention for sure and included on my cutting wish list for this winter.

PS…  Sas, ditto kudos to your photos also!  Very nice…!

Does anyone know how many Col de Dame Blanc trees are planted at UCD, and is it possible that some have FMV and some don't?
The way my three cuttings are performing tells me that this might be the case, but I'm not sure.

I just harvested some Col de Dame Blanc from my first year tree. These figs are the best tasting figs that I've ever had but the shape on some is not a perfect pair shape or a uniform shape.

Hi! Everyone,

The owner of the Col De Dame Blanc tree went on vacation in Greek. His family members at home cut the tree short. I will take photos of that tree when I have a chance to come by. I am sorry to everyone who asked for the cuttings. I will share if I have these cuttings in the near future. Thank you for your understanding.

Sas: Your figs look very tasty, thanks for sharing.

Best,
Tam

Dear Tam,

I'm new to the world of figs and I planted 10 small trees in my backyard last summer. I am very interested in receiving two cuttings from the Col De Dame Blanc tree you discussed and displayed in your posting of 11/14/13. Please let me know if I can receive 2 cuttings so I can root them. I will be glad to pay for the shipping postage and your time. Thanks in advance for your kind consideration.

last yr was first yr i had CdDB from my tree. even with ton of rain we had, they did not split. but i keep all my trees in container.

Tam has been gone for some time....hopefully she will come back. I got some CDD Blanc cuttings from a generous member. I lost most of them...Think it was those nasty Gnats....oh well....will ask for 3 foot cuttings with roots, next time....LOL

Tam,

I join FigEd and Armando in making a plea for Col de Dame Blanc cuttings.    Or, from any other kind member, who has this fig!   Think we are running out of pruning time and I’m not getting any offers nor seeing any for sale.   Happy to pay for cuttings and postage!   Thanks…..

It seems that most forum members who have CdDB either got it from UCD or from someone else who got it from UCD.  I would definitely check with UCD.

I got CDDB from someone (non fig forum) who got it from UCD a decade ago. I clipped the cuttings myself, and the parent tree was rather small for a tree that old IMO - other varieties of figs growing around it were significantly larger. I got 2 cuttings to root and they are slow growers compared to most of my other figs. If you arent' seeing many available cuttings, perhaps the reason is because it's just doesn't put out much vegetative material.

I did get 2 ripe fruits just over a year after starting them, and wowiiieee - what a good tasting fruit.

mine is from USDA/UCD. growth isn't any problem for mine... it just won't branch. i pinched the terminal bud last season. it looks as if it might get some branch this yr. will have to see.

The owner went back to Greek for his vacation, his family members at home cut the tree short in the fall of 2013. After the owner return from Greek, I talked to him about tree being cut short without letting me know. He promised to give that tree to me last year but he recommended me to wait until the spring of 2014 for the digging. So, yesterday I went to his house and dug the the tree up. Sorry I do not have any cuttings of this tree at this time. I planted it in the ground in the back of my house. In a few years, if this tree is truly the Col De Dame Blanc I am happy to share the cuttings with you all. Before the tree was cut down last fall 2013, I was lucky enough to take 10 nice size cuttings in early October 2013. I have been propagating them since early October 2013, the cutting stems are still green but they still do not had any root or leaf out yet. It is almost eight months now, they still remain the same... no roots or leaves yet. Recently, my cats chewed most the cuttings, I still have one left.  Thank you for watching.

Best,
Tam

That is too bad they cut it back so much, it makes transplanting a bit easier though.  My potted cddb just started to pop a bud so I am off to a happy start this spring as long as the weather doesn't hurt me.  It will be interesting to see how this one preforms for you this year and to compare with known cddb to confirm it's heritage.

Wow, that was quite a tree.

People are funny about cuttings sometimes.  I made contact with someone last fall and had a very pleasant and encouraging set of email exchanges about a fig tree they had.  I made it perfectly clear that I would like some cuttings if they pruned their tree, and they said that they do prune their tree and throw out the cuttings and they'd be more than happy to give me some cuttings.  I met them in person literally just a few days later only to learn that they just pruned their tree and threw out all the cuttings.  Huh?!?!

...and when I say "people are funny" I mean normal people who might have 1 tree...not the people on this forum.  The people on this forum are far from normal and are typically extraordinarily generous with cuttings ;-)
Jim
