Col de dame noir in zone 7

Here are a couple of cddn's.  Very beautiful fig.  I call it the Hershell Walker fig because of it's extremely muscular looking neck (remember his traps?). Tasted great too.

Nice looking fig. Hershell was the man

Ed,
That looks like a good fig. Do you grow it in the ground or pot? Is it cold hardy?
Also Hershell Walker still looks like a beast.

wow... i need some of that. that looks wonderful.

Great looking fig. So you it tasted great. Do you think it is a contender for one of the best tasting varieties?

Hershel is revered down here in the Bulldog nation.

He's an amazing athlete. He still fights MMA/UFC, at 50!

Looks great Ed. Will you have others ripening this year? Do you have other col de dames to compare. I have a col de dame grise, but plucked all the figs off in it's first year of growing. It's a good grower, I put mine in a 30 gal pot in spring and already has roots growing out of pot into the ground. My son took pics of it this weekend and put  them on flickr, but have not figured out how to post here.

luke

it looks great fig.

This was grown in a pot.  I have no information as to how cold hardy this fig is.  It was excellent tasting but not quite as good as Black Madeira, Petite Aubique, Latarolla and a few other top notch figs.  Two possible reasons, first as we all know taste is a very subjective matter and even though the cddn looks ripe I usually let my figs stay on the tree at least another 3-4 days.  I just could not do that this time.  The plant has many more figs and I hope I don't have to go the olive oil way to help ripen those figs.

Wow they do look great !

Now I know this is way off topic but can someone direct me to the thread on using olive oil to ripen figs?!

Ed,
Those look great. I'm excited to see them ripen in zone 7 as I'm also in 7 and hope to get these figs to ripen next year.
But geeez - the HW trade was so horrible for skins fans like me I still hold a grudge against the Vikings. If free agency hadn't kicked in Dallas would have won another 3 or 4 more Superbowls - or more. That trade was the smartest thing the Cowgirls ever did and although HW was/is an amazing guy -- I'm just not a fan.
But beautiful figs!

Hortstu, it is mentioned in that 1910 book linked from here yesterday.

Thank you. Sorry to interrupt.

I take a toothpic and insert it into olive oil and apply to the eye of the fig.  It absolutely works to ripen the figs but dosen't ripen them as good as that yellow thing in the sky.

I've done the same thing as Ed but used a Qtip to apply the olive oil to the eye of the fig.  It does work.  It seems to force the figs into ripening earlier than they otherwise would.  But I have found that the figs don't taste as good when ripened in this way.  I guess at the very end of the season it's better than nothing.

Quote

Ed, do you put the tooth pic inside the eye or just around the outside?

Quote

Just like Joe, I apply to the exterior.  He is also correct in that it won't taste as good as if sun ripened but will taste better than nothing at all.

Ed,

They look great!! All my CDDs grew nicely but no hint of fruiting. How old is your tree?

Mine ,in ground started to ripe three days ago.
In faCT BOTH,THE black and grise, are ripening now very late, this year.
Last year I had ripe fruits on September 10,but not this year.
