Colasanti Dark

Last fig from my older tree. One of my favorite figs.

Young Leaves look like this.

A very productive tree too. Every node on my tree has a fig.

Hey Paul, it is very productive my 3 year old plant is severly rootbound need to chop the roots and put in a 10g pot next season.

Thanks Nelson.
The plant is productive and the summer was like a real summer here so I got some ripe fruits too. I believe my plant was in its second summer, smal but productive as Paul mentioned.

Nelson, how does the Colasanti  compare in sweetness to Sal's EL?

Also, do you know how many days before or after it ripens, compared to Marseilles Black VS?

Also Nelson, How well did it stand up to this summers heavy rains?

Thanks for posting the pictures. I will add the pictures to my picture identification file.

Bob

Overall very good taste. In my opinion it has slight edge over Sal's EL. Again this may differ from season to season. Nelson would be in better position to comment. There is another small dark fig that is rumoured to be excellent -- it is St. Rita. Thanks to a kind collecter, it would be an addition to my collection this Fall.

Hi Robert, most of my plants are delayed by 4 weeks this year as most broke dormancy in late may into mid June. Blk. Marseilles Vs just started to ripen figs for me this week and has done real well considering its been cool and raining the Blk. Marseilles Vs figs tasted extremely good. Colasanti Dark is sweeter than Both hardy chicago & Sal's El it has somewhat of a fruity flavour also tastes different compared to Blk. Marseilles Vs all 4 are good figs to grow in short summer climates.

I like the leaves.

Nice looking fig.  I can tell just by the photo that I would like it.

Hello Nelson -- any chance you have good news on your Colasanti Dark breba productivity for 2012. If yes, some pictures would sure spice up my anticipation from my tree. It is still in the garage and all its tips look like it is loaded with energy to spring out.

Hi Paully,
Nelson gave me a few Colasati dark cuttings last year,
Breba are forming on the plants. I am leaving one or two breba on one of the plants. On the others I have removed them.

Hello Paul & Grant,  The last 2 season's I have prunned off all new growth off my tree so I never noticed any breba's. But last year I didnt prune my mothers tree hard compared to mine and her tree is loaded with breba's.  I will be leaving all the brebas on the tree to see if they are any good.

I am noticing lots of breba's this year on allot of plants so I will leave a few just to see what happens.

I am interested if this is the same tree as what I have, I will take pictures this weekend, if it is the same, then the production looks huge, I have about 15-20 brebas on a two year old tree, some will be coming off of course.

I was a little late with the pictures, the one in question is in the green tub.

Is any one growing Colasanti Dark, in the ground, in Canada?

How does it stand up against Marseilles Black VS, for cold hardiness?

Bob, zone 5 Connecticut

Bob I do have my older Colasanti Dark Inground now just planted it last month so cant say how hardy it is yet. Will have a better Idea next spring but I do have it next to my "Maryland Brown Turkey" Wich I do know is hardy.

Can any one post more history on Colasanti Dark?

Such as were it originated.

Has any one been growing it out side in Canada, in a zone 5, for any length of time?

How does it compare in cold hardiness to Marseilles Black VS, or English Brown Turkey.

Does it ripen all of it's fruit before frost?

Is any one getting ripe fruit from it in zone 4?

Is there any one in the states who would be willing to trade cuttings of Colasanti Dark, for either Hardy Hartford, or Gino's cuttings?

Bob, zone 5 Connecticut

Hi Rob
here is a bit on Colasanti dark, apparently it is originally from Sicily.

RE: Potted Italian fig from Colasanti Farms

Thanks for your input. I got one also, but I wasn't sure what color it was. After contacting Colasanti and showing them a picture of it they said it was the dark fig by looking at the leaf photo.
They told me it was a Sicilian fig. I'm naming it Colasanti dark for now until I know what it actually is."

Bob I was also told that the person who originaly obtained and propagated the figs had passed away before they were able to find out what varieties they were.

Fixed the picture links.

Nelson, at this time of the year the red pulp of CD is soooooo tempting. My wife made a Desert King smoothie --- vanilla ice cream. It was good. It was frozen DK from last year production.

Thanks for fixing the links.
