Cold weather question

It's going down to 43f tonight and up to mid 60s tomorrow . Should warm up a few degrees from that over the next week . Will that harm the fruit ?

Thanks..... john

I hope not.

Hey Grant

How goes the fig harvest this year ?

I put my fig in the garage last night. It was 38 degrees at 7:30 am this morning. Cold weather is here in my area south west PA.

I put my trees in the cellar a few minutes ago.  The temps are said to go to upper 20s tonight.  I didn't have the time to erect the plastic tunnel today, so the cellar is the answer for me.

Last night went down to upper 30s and I left my trees out.  I don't see any bad effect from that, but below 32, and it's time for protection.

Do you have any pic of the plastic tunnel?
How long or cold can you use the tunnel?  And do you cover the ends?
That is a great idea.
How long can you leave the trees in your cellar with out sun?

bugs,

I have pics on my website for the tunnel, from last year.  Here's the LINK.

I kept my trees in the tunnel until November 6, last year.  I opened the top on sunny warm days, and left it closed on cooler days.  I think we had some 20 degree nights by that date.  I cover the ends with more plastic and duct tape.

After the trees go dormant I put them in my cellar, and they stay there until the next spring.  Once they're dormant, sun is not needed.

Good luck bugs.

Very nice pic and great idea. You know what I will doing tomorrow.
What is the temperature. in your cellar?
Thank!

My cellar stays between 35-40 deg. F.  I think you can go a little colder with no problem, but you don't want it to get too warm, or the trees will come out of dormancy and start to grow.

That is about the temp of my garage. This will be my first year or storage. Hopping the trees will make it.

The hoop, are they 3/4" or 1" 10' long plastic pipe?

As long as the temp is below 42f the trees will go into dormancy and stay there . It is the root temp that is important . No light at all is required just make sure soil doesn't go completely dry ( I water once a month ). A few degrees below freezing is fine , but I try to keep mine above freezing and never lost any in my garage .

The hoops are 3/4" plastic electrical pipe 10 feet long, it bends very easily.  I hammered 1/2" steel pipe, 2 foot long pieces, into the ground where the end of the plastic pipe would be, then slid the plastic pipe over it.  So the steel pipe has 1 foot in the ground, and one foot sticking up above ground.  It acts as an anchor for each end of the plastic pipe.

I also used 1-1/2" pipe to attach the plastic to and that weighs it down and holds it so the wind can't blow it off the frame.

Hi John.
the figs are going Ok.
a lone lattarula,
about 25 celestes( a few more still ripening) still getting a ripe one every few days and some unknowns are close to being ripe.
feeling a bit negligent as I am eating them without taking pics.
My 17 year old daughter is really enjoying them. We shared a ripe one today, greenyellow, sweet with amber center and a bit of a seed crunch, and she said, "dad you should get more figs" and in response to my, "we have a lot of good fig trees out there" she said, "but I don't have  a plate full!!"

Grant ,
I have about 15 good size trees with a few hundred figs in total on them this year . You would think I would get full plates . But they come 1 one day then maybe 3 the next then nothing then 5 . The most Ive had was 6 .
This weather is not going to help but I have managed to try almost from every tree except 2 , and one of those is swelling them up . Most of the figs are still on the trees and if this weather warms up a bit I should have plenty for a while .
My wife is the fig monster around here . She hasn't tried a fig she didn't like .

John

Well, it only got down to 34F this morning.  So, I could have left the figs out, but better safe than sorry.  I'll put them out in a few minutes, and back in for one more cold night tonight.

The temp is going up today so i will be putting my trees out today. The night temp will only go down to the 50 f. So I will stay out.
Thanks for the pipe size.

John thanks for your input about the garage and watering once a month.
