Coll de Dama Roja Fruit

Today I picked my second fruit of this nice variety.  I acquired it from another USA grower (note to USDA-APHIS, etc.!), please do not ask me about the source.  My tree is still relatively small but had been grown in my greenhouse until being planted in the ground around a month ago.  The fruit taste was very good but expect it to be better with more heat in a month or so.  It appears to be a productive variety.

The first fruit had skin that wasn't quite as dark.  The fruit on page 318 of Pons book shows a fair amount of variability but the pulp should be darker.  Pons' fruit has cracks.  For whatever reason, I don't see cracks on my fruit very often.  I've been delaying harvest of the fruit but discovered it had dropped from the tree when I checked it 30 minutes ago.

FYI - I do not anticipate selling/trading cuttings or trees of this variety for a couple of years.

Are you sure you don't want to trade now?

Only if you have a fake BNR? LOL

Never mind...yes, I'm sure, for now. :)

Looks tasty, hope to see more of this one coming up.

Harvey,

I have the following;

B. Negra
B. Blanca
B. Blanca Rimada
B. Negra Rimada
B. Rossa
B. Verde

Take your pick for future trade.

What a gorgeous fig!

Would you take a good mouser cat in trade? ;)

Rafed, stay after school and we'll talk, LOL.

Gina, have 3 cats already, at least 1 or 2 too many!

Rafed, seriously? You have all of those? Man, Good Job, Great collection!

Harvey,

I'll bring the vegas style deck of cards but instead of numbers I'll have pictures of each cultivar I have.
We'll play blackjack, fig style. LOL

Ryan,

This is the internet, anything that's stated must be true;)

Hmmm, how 'bout I get a cutting if I take the cats off your hands???

Just kidding - I already have many nice figs, and Rafed wants it far more than I do. :)

I think if Harvey is able he will do it. But if he says not now then I guess it's not now. I can wait till later.

per pons "muy sabroso, dulce". so.. very tasty and sweet. sounds good.

I find the idea that Harvey needs to say what he said a sad thing.

We need, by far, more people trying to pollinate good varieties with persistent caprifigs and planting them out. We don't need any more "elite" figs, imported from outside the US or just swapping with all the cash out there.

Shah8,

For us northerners what you are suggesting on the caprifigs is next to impossible.
If you have a method on getting it done then I'm here to listen.

i disagree. we need known varieties that has known quality more than ever. we need to preserve them as much as possible. it's good we have CA where new varieties can be bred and grown, but that takes time, and meanwhile, we can lose the old varieties. preserving what's out there should come before breeding new ones.

My comment was made simply because I didn't want to have to reply to a bunch of PMs or emails for requests.  My top priority is to grow it, evaluate it, and create a backup for myself.

Pete, all we have for figs developed for the humid SE are Hunt, a TX-BA-1, Alma, and a smattering of LSU selections, actually released and no.  We *really* could use someone sprouting seeds from the better dark figs, in particular.

Looks like a lovely plant.  Good luck with it.

shah8,

that would help, but there are already named varieties that does well in humid south. CdDB is one of them. not sure if CdDR will or not, but not looking for it.

Nice looking fig.  Good luck with it  :)

Man, that thing looks like a Ruby!
So, Harvey, can you pick me up at the airport?

Yes, in August 2016 :)

Harvey,

This is a very nice little fig.

Francisco

I do like the color of the pulp; although there is more meat than pulp.

I have a small plant of CdD "Brun". Does anyone know if thats the same as this "roja"? I don't see much info on Brun and wondered seeing the brown skin of the roja if its one in the same?
