Coming to a Home Depot near you

Now that is a lot of figs.  I didn't wander the rows to see what varieties they were though.

Is that their warehouse prior to shipping?  That's a lot of figs for sure!!

I asked our Home Depot what they did with the trees when they went dormant.  "Toss Em."

I wasn't there the day they tossed.

No it is a private nursery that Home depot has a contract with.  That double row is figs all the way to the building.  to the right of the figs is blackberries and to the left blueberries.  There are many many rows out of camera range as well with other fruiting plants.  The reason they toss the plants is they only pay $1 a plant......then sell them for $10 so a few tossed at the end of the season is no big deal.

If I remember right, it is worse than that. The plants belong to the grower until HD sells them, then they pay the grower. If the tree does not sell (dies, stolen, thrown away, etc.), the nursery does not get paid. The seller does not have incentive to mark the tree down too much.

I highly doubt HD is paying only $1 for one gallon plants.

HD and Lowes in this area
routinely mark down their plants,
starting at 50% off, then to 75%
then final is 90% off.

On the last day you can get them even cheaper
if you buy a bunch.

WillsC,

Is that Simpson's Nursery?

HungryJack,

While I am sure it does vary some across the country here in Florida from this nursery they pay $1 a plant for 1 gallon figs, blueberries and blackberries....I know it for a fact.    There is a reason they do final markdown at 90% off.....they break even.

Strudledog,

No.

There are different arrangements Home Depot and Lowe's have with nurseries.  Sometimes they buy them outright and other times they are essentially on consignment.  I discussed this in quite a bit of detail when I was trying to negotiate a discount on 6 potted figs (for grafting stock) in December.  Also, I worked in lending and financed a couple of nurseries that sold to Home Depot and Lowe's.  Our focus on getting cheap plants has really been brutal for the producing nurseries.

Soon they will be here from China or elsewhere for a penny and still cost a fortune at the dept. store.

shipping companies/ ports, etc  ought to continue to do well.
