Snow Showers

Windy. Light snow in the evening will give way to partly cloudy skies overnight. Low around 5F. Winds NW at 25 to 35 mph. Chance of snow 80%. Snow accumulations less than one inch. A dangerous combination of snow, wind and cold is whipping through the upper Midwest, creating full-fledged blizzard conditions in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota.

Conditions are so bad in some places that snow plows have been ordered off the road, according to The Associated Press. As many as 18 inches of snow is expected in some areas.

The powerhouse storm was expected to gain strength as it heads toward Chicago.

Forecasters say the storm will bring a wintry blast to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region from Sunday into Monday, ushering in a new shot of Arctic air that will encompass much of the eastern part of the nation next week.

Blizzard watches and warnings were in effect today for parts of South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Nebraska.

Snow Storm

People make their way to a college basketball game on the University of Minnesota campus during a snowstorm in Minneapolis on Saturday.

The National Weather Service defines a blizzard as "sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or greater, considerable falling and/or blowing snow reducing visibility frequently to 1/4 mile or less for a period of three hours or more."

The storm is creating near white-out conditions in some areas, resulting in very dangerous travel conditions on highways and delayed flights.

"Life-threatening conditions are expected now through Sunday Morning," the National Weather Service said in an advisory. "Travel is strongly discouraged."

The nasty weather caused trouble for the New York Giants, who are due to play a football game against the Vikings in Minnesota on Sunday. The Giants' plane was diverted to Kansas City today after the harsh weather closed the Minneapolis-St Paul airport. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the team is planning to fly to Minnesota on Sunday morning and the game was still on as scheduled at 1 p.m.

Minneapolis and Green Bay, Wis., were in the path of heaviest snow and wind, which will result in dangerously low wind chills as the storm reaches its peak. Accumulating snow and strong winds will extend southward into Milwaukee, Chicago and Detroit, as well as through the Ohio Valley, where the most severe cold will follow the storm.

The storm will move eastward through Ontario into Quebec on Sunday and Sunday night, but the southern part of the storm will still pack some punch as it moves through the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region.

While the center of the storm will remain to the north, the storm and lake-effect snow immediately following the storm will produce heavy snow in parts of western New York and western Pennsylvania. Mild air racing northward in advance of the storm will likely prevent high snowfall amounts farther to the east, but rain changing to snow might result in slippery road conditions as far east as the major cities along the Eastern Seaboard on Sunday evening.

The storm will be followed by a blast of cold air that will be more intense than the cold that gripped much of the nation last week.

Daytime temperatures will remain below zero in parts of Minnesota on Monday, and below-freezing temperatures are again a threat as far south as central Florida by the middle of next week. The cold air pouring over the relatively warm lakes will result in another multi-day snowstorm in the lee of the Great Lakes. Snowfall totals of 1 to 3 feet are likely in the typically hard-hit snow belt regions, the same general area that had between 1 and 4 feet of snow this week.

Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.

pretty much the same forecast here.

i checked my temperature history here for the last year and my coldest temps were at the beginning of jan last year. this week i hit a low of 14 and i had 2 potted figs still out. im waiting to see if the exposure was fatal [though id bet it wasn't]

Chills «--- on his son's wii

Its coming Marty, my family in town 40 miles sw got over a foot already and more coming, not much here in altoona, much smaller(warmer microclimate) than just a few miles away, we are much lower out of the mountains which really gets hit. Some potted fig trees outside sheltered by the walls are still fine!!!!!!!!!!!! This will be great if they will survive the winter, only won't put much fruit on as this sheltered location is in the north sheltered on the other side by a s wall and very very bad lack of light, but good for winter protection so far, just move them to the sun in the spring, maybe an experiment going on????  Ciao!

Not sure what the issue is: in the 80s here.

Good 1 Jon !
Hopefully your summer will come this fig season as it seemed
to never arrive last season.  ; )

Poor folks up North for those not used to snow here is a little reading what there dealing with, here not so bad just few more inches this morning and a few more coming to deal with little later today. Break in the snow now so i go and deal with it.

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 12) -- A storm that spanned parts of eight states continued to dump heavy snow in the upper Midwest on Sunday, collapsing the Metrodome in Minneapolis and forcing numerous road closures.

The storm was moving eastward a day after it dumped 20 inches of snow in some places. A Sunday NFL football game between the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings had already been pushed to Monday because the Giants couldn't get to Minneapolis to play when the inflatable Metrodome collapsed Sunday. It's uncertain when that game will now be played.

A blizzard warning was in effect Sunday for Chicago and much of northern Illinois, all of Iowa, large sections of southern Minnesota and Wisconsin, and smaller areas in North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri and Michigan, according to the National Weather Service. Most of the rest of the region was under a winter storm warning or a hard freeze watch.

Wisconsin authorities issued a statewide no-travel advisory Saturday, citing blizzard and winter storm warnings in nearly every county.

Hey Sal if you read this your team the Giants are stuck for now in Kansas City as there flight could not make it to Minn.

Brrrrr - As I write this note it has warmed up to 18 (-8C) but was 12 (-11C) last night with a very strong north wind blowing all day yesterday.   Tonight in the Kansas City area it will get down to 0 (-17C).   To me it seems early to be getting such cold temps - this is mid January weather!

All of the potted poms and figs are stuffed in the garage and may require some accessory heat.  I always aim to keep the air temp above 22 deg.    The one covered fig in the yard will get some accessory heat from a low wattage bulb.

Ingevald

It's 10:30 am and 80 degrees...heading to 90 this afternoon...better go water my figgies. Viewing of the Geminid Meteor shower on Tues should be quite comfortable with a predicted low of 52. ;-)

In the middle east in countries like Israel, Syria, and Lebanon, it has been in the 80's and 90's the entire fall with no rain which is very unusual. However the past two days they were hit with a storm and in areas that never seen snow were covered. Coastal areas were flooded and the wind broke large trees.

Snow and low temperatures have been mentioned by many here. We got a short reprieve for a couple of days from deep freeze but replaced by freezing rain and the cars drive like boats and sometimes the backside of the car seems to be in competition with the front of the car to reach the destination before the frond of the car. No more out in the car unless absolutely necessary so better be doing something with the figs.

Rain & rain overhere. Weather good for preparing cuttings & air layereds to be send out this week.

It definately came my way today! I went out to close the door on one of my outbuildings as the wind had blown it open. Took my camera with me to get a few shots of my bamboo. It's nice to see some green amid all the snow & ice.

About that snow?? I'll let these pics speak for themselves:

Adding a few details about some of the pictures;

1) The kid's swingset doesn't look very inviting right now!

2) The middle pic shows the thermometer I have sitting on an outside window sill. The temp reading is the temp under my house - I think it's too warm for the figs I have under there. Still have to work up the motivation to move them to my attic. The attic will get much colder, even below freezing. But I can set some of the pots on top of my heating duct-work. This might work @ keeping the roots warm while allowing the top of the plant to stay cold. Anyone see anything wrong with that scenario?

3) In the last 2 pics you can see a tree-line in the distance. Between the tree-line & the bamboo in the foreground is all farmland. We're always surrounded by crops in the summer. Usually soybean,  wheat, or popcorn.

Spent the day, yesterday, watering all the figs and bananas. Warmer outside than nside today, all the door and windows open.

Hi Bill,

Does the bamboo lose its leaves, or freeze?  The snow is so pretty.

noss

You just love doing that don't you Jon!? We're looking for others to share in our misery, not rub it in!  Rassim-Frassim SoCos :-/ !

Took the 4 X 4 out for a drive awhile ago. The roads are hazardous to say the least.

To answer your question noss; The bamboo does not lose its leaves in the same way a deciduos tree would. It sort of sheds old leaves as it's putting on new leaves during the growing season. It keeps nice green leaves all through the winter.

Its nice to get in the middle of a large grove of CH bamboo in the winter. It really blocks the wind & it's kind of peaceful in there. My clumps aren't quite big enough to "get inside of" yet but my friend has some much larger groves.

The Phylostachys family of bamboo has the most cold hardy varieties. Some are able to withstand temps well below 0F. Phylostachys Nuda is reported to handle temps down to -15F.

BTW noss, you could grow Moso bamboo (P. edulis) in your zone. It's probably the largest phylostacys bamboo. It can grow up to 80' in height and as much as 7" in diameter. The bamboo they "flew" around on in the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was Moso bamboo. Very cool bamboo IMHO. Wish I had more land. I would definately grow more bamboo if I did.

Bill,

We will send Jon some coal for Christmas!

It was hammer down on Interstate 40 till I got to Memphis and then there was some stray snow.
Got to about Jackson, Tn. then things got ugly.
Accidents everywhere!
The roads' been closed for a few hours because trucks and cars can't climb a hill. It's all ice.

I got off at the truck stop in Kingston Springs, Tn. and it is a big mess.
Had to cut my day a couple hours early but, oh well.

Have to be in Edmundston, NB. on Wednesday morning and if things don't improve then I will be late, Oh well.

One thing for sure, I can never get used to this!

Rafed, I still waiting for the snow you promised last year.

Hi Bill,

Bamboo grows down here, all over the place.  It's pretty and I never thought of it growing up North, even in your zone.  Thought of it as tropical.

Thanks,

noss

Rafed,

Better late than wrecked.  Stay safe--You are too precious.  Godspeed in all your travels.

You could take a truckload of snow and dump it onto Jon, maybe, and get to have a nice visit.  Just don't dump it on his figs--They're innocent.  ;)

noss

Hi noss,

There aren't alot of people that realize that some of the "big" bamboo varieties (40'+) will do just fine here. Most local folks I talk to about it are very suprised too.

We have native river cane around here but it maxes out at about 15-20' & about 1/2'" in dia. Makes great plant stakes! Native americans used it to make arrow shafts - among other things.

Weather.com said that it felt like 4ºF outside this morning when I left for work.  Fun times....

Good one Jason!

Vivian,
I informed my customer about the delay and he understood. You should have seen the truck stop this morning, It was chaos.
The lot was one big can of sardines, everything was cramped in and nobody was moving.

Made it out well this morning with only a few minor delays.

Jon,
You will get your snow.

Rafed: Jon's rule about snow - you visit it; it doesn't visit you.

Jon,
Too bad you have to go through all that trouble just to see some snow.

I just sit back in my living room sofa and sip warm cider and enjoy it fall to the ground.
