Comparing Figo Preto and Black Madeira

I plan to grow these two varieties as close to the same growth conditions as possible over the next few years to see how they do.  Black Madeira is the larger of the two.  Both were started from cuttings around Feb/March of this year.  At the beginning they looked almost identical in leaf structure and size.  But then I up-potted them in June and for some reason Figo Preto was set back by this while Black Madeira didn't skip a bit.  Now F.P. is growing good again and will probably catch up with B.M.  I expected these varieties to be relatively slow growers with obvious FMV but as soon as it started getting warm they took off and have been very good growers.  They haven't shown any FMV symptoms so far knock on wood.  Rumor has it that F.P. bears fruit a bit earlier in the season than B.M. but that both tend to be late in fruiting.  Unlike most of my other figs, I plan to keep these two in containers over the long term and this should help get them a bit of a head start in the spring.

For the images of single trees you can mouse over the image and the file name will tell you which variety it is.

I also forgot to mention a bit of background about these varieties - they both originate from Madeira island in Portugal.  Some believe they may be identical but others have noted some differences such as ripening times.

at least in my back deck, shape of the figs are slightly different. they both put on the figs around same time. leaves are similar, but not exactly same. Black Madeira is vigorous in putting on the figs, but Figo Preto shows more upward growth. BM is loaded right now. FP also has good number of figs, but not clustered like BM. FP is slightly older. an air layer from a generous member from last yr. BM is cutting i rooted spring of 2012.

I don't have Black Madeira YET but do have Figo Preto and it too does not show any FMV. The leaves are super clean.

If only all the other trees were so clean.

Thanks guys for sharing your experience with these varieties.  Pete, please feel free to post comparison photos of your own!  It sounds like both varieties have done really well for you and soon you will be able to compare the taste.
