Could someone tell me whats wrong with my fig tree?

Hi all!  I live in a hot climate so I usually water it every day.  That may be the problem which is causing the leaves to turn this yellow.  I just wanted to make sure.
Any ideas as to what's going on ?

Thanks :)

Figs don't like wet feet.

It's that time of the year, as it slows down, it needs less water.

Where are you located?

I find this a helpful reference

Great chart!  Thanks, Gloria!

I agree, that is a great chart.  Thank you for sharing it.

It's not my thread lampo, my figs are super health. I was only commenting on the nice chart.

Hi COGardener,

Oops...

My appologies!

TheChronicGardener,

Hi
Your tree is suffering from an excessive dose of water and you must stop your daily irrigation.
Otherwise the root system may rot and collapse...
So close to dormancy, under normal circumstances its water requirements shall be a few ounces every other week... may be once a month.

If the fig is in a small/manageable pot try and feel what is a heavy pot for its size ( meaning enough but not too much water).. as well as the opposite,  being rather light it  indicates it's getting dry and needs more water..
When through spring and summer, all those leaves consume a lot of moisture and  is lost through evaporation... watch the attitude of the leaf stalks... if straight, rigid, it tells enough water and when they start to bend down.. it's time to irrigate.
In summer yes, you probably need to irrigate a bit every day... but follow what the leaves tell you

Gloria's chart is great. Thanks for sharing

Francisco,

Not a worry in the world.  :)

Most of my trees get what looks like rust spots at the same time that they turn yellow, just before they drop all their leaves and go dormant. I had assumed this was just part of the cycle. I do not water on any schedule. I stick my finger in the soil and only water when the top inch or two get dry. If it is too much water, it is because of rain. I don't really want to cover or move my pots... but should I?

My sister in Hawaii tells me that the leaves on the tree I sent her have also turned rusty lately. I guess I gave her bad info when I told her it is normal this time of year.

If its a deficiency, should I wait until Spring to apply some potassium? I would expect that any balanced fertilizer would have enough potassium to prevent a deficiency.

By the way, here in So. Cal., none of my plants are dormant yet, but some plants have leaves turning yellow (some rusty) and falling off, while at the same time, new leaves are growing. My Panache leaves turned yellow and dropped a week or two ago, and today I see it has a whole new set of leaves top to bottom. Paradise can be confusing.

TheChronicGardener,
IMO, if the trees are container grown it may be nutrient deficiency due to leaching of water soluble nutrients like Magnesium...

I water my trees 2 times per day, but I also follow a fertilization schedule that maintains a known amount of soil nutrients.

Good Luck.

Pete, do you maintain your fertilization schedule right up to dormancy? I thought I was supposed to cut off ferts this time of year. Maybe that's why this seems normal to me since that's what I always do?

Paul,
My fertilization schedule is stopped ~ 6 weeks before dormancy, first frost.

I'm currently experimenting with dilute Hydroponic "Bloom" fertilizers from 6 weeks to ~ 2 weeks before first frost. The Bloom fertilizers have a reduced N and increased P ratio with a constant K.
