counting figs.

so the night temp is now around 40-50 degrees. the day temp in 70. the trees are dropping leaves and getting ready to go in rather early this year. i was hoping to see the trees out there till mid nov like last year, but i won't get what i wished for.

yesterday after work, i was check the trees and saw trail of ants going up my Paradiso Gene. apparently, i missed one perfectly ripened fig. i brushed ants away, and took a look at the fig. it was rather spotted outside. considering the amount of rain we had recently, i'm surprised how well this one survived. the eye wasn't open at all. well.. it was, but it was blocked with drop of thick honey.

i opened it up with my fingers thinking it might have some bugs inside and i won't be able to eat it. if ants, i don't have problem, but i have seen house flies after weeks of rain last time. i was glad to see there were no ants, flies, or anything crawling inisde.

the pulps were that dark yet bright red. it was filled with honey. i took a bite and taste of watermelon just washed over me. this was a fig worth finding when i though the season was done. then i turned around to see my Kathleen's Black. i found 3 figs about to finish turning color and getting ready to ripen.

this morning i woke up with rain outside of my house. i'm hoping the rain will stop soon and give Kathleen's Black chance to give me those 3 figs.

I just got a Paradiso Gene and it sounds like a good one from what you just wrote. Still waiting for my 3 Preto figs to ripen too and still getting Sal's Corleone and a couple other odds and ends so this has been a very good season for me.

Same exact weather here Pete. Same exact weather. Some of my trees have figs on also, Mission, CdD Grise, Verte, Strawberry, LSU Late Black, LSU Black, Weeping, Pananas Purple, Purple Passion, etc ......all dont taste like nothing. Weather this year is much different than those in the past.

I still have several trees with fruit on them.  I've been picking off new fruit as of 3 weeks ago.  I'm hoping I still have enough heat for them to ripen.

Sanford needs about a 1-4 weeks.  I picked a few that I thought would need longer.  This tree is still producing a lot of figs
Aldo needs about 3 weeks
Armenian needs about 3-4 weeks
Golden Celeste needs about 4 weeks
Black Mission needs about 3 weeks

Our forecast doesn't indicate any kind of weather which might spoil the figs... so I've got my fingers crossed

My LSU Purple is still growing!  Daytime temps in the 80's for the next week or so. night temps in the low 70s, 60s then 50s and 40s.  Should I remove the newest figs at the tips of the branches or just leave them alone?  I hope to start picking some by the end of Oct.

Is daytime temp more of a factor for ripening then evening temps?

Thanks

Jo-Ann,

I started picking off anything new about three weeks ago.  I'm hoping anything older than that will ripen.

I have 3 hopeful figs left hanging, 1 Petite Neg, 2 Flanders. I flicked and pinched off the mini's about a month ago. About a week and a half ago I tried the olive oil on the Q-tip trick on the end of the figs. The PN is swelling and starting to darken. The Flanders, is a resistant SOB, some days I look at and think woohoo, next day I think I'm imaging it all and nothing has changed.
Should I be concerned that 3 lonely figs can bring me so much entertainment?

I have quite a good number of large but unripe figs on my small plants. Something was eating them a couple weeks ago, but that seems to have stopped. It's still warm here so I have hopes for many of them. They probably won't taste as good because it's so late and the trees are young, but I'm willing to suffer through eating them. :)

i had one of the Kathleen's Black yesterday. it was good.. it was very good. it's totally different fig from the first one i had in the spring. and it was about twice as large too. not sure what's going on, but slight cooler temp might work for the KB. have few more hanging in there and the weather looks great for the rest of the week. hope the birds have moved away and don't come snacking...

Maybe.  But not here, Calvin.  Most of us here understand...:-)
