Co-worker's unknown fig tree...

Actually it is in the back yard of the son of a man I work with. They don't know the variety.  It is all grown up around it.  They don't know what to do with the figs.  Said I could help with that! :)

He brought a leaf to work...

Any ID help would be appreciated.  I'm going one evening soon after work to inspect this tree and take more pics.

Celeste

I'm new to figs but the leafs and growth do look like my Celeste but seeing some ripe figs might help a bit with the ID.

If there are any ripe to be had I will surely take pics just before stuffing my face. :)

Yup. Tell your coworker that tasting a couple of figs is the only way to really ID it. :).

Hi Charlie,
Don't tell the co-worker about the strain,  but tell the co-worker the guys and gals on the forum said that
it would take a basket full of "perfectly ripe fruits" to identify the strain :P . Hopefully we'll find what it is with one basket only ...

Ok, seriously, some ripe fruits would help to be sure.

He said they have never done anything with the tree nor eaten any figs.  Monday he brought a fairly dry leaf and small juvenile fig that was picked last Friday and had put in a paper bag and kept all weekend in his car. Shriveled up to say the least lol. Said the tree was fairly good size and didn't seem to have any interest in wanting anything to do with it. Good chance I will have free run to take cuttings, do air layers or anything I want.  That may change if they ever eat a ripe fig, we'll see.

Had a very brief encounter with the tree today.  It is a mess for sure and is going to get a good trimming from yours truly after dormancy and I'm not even going to charge them lol.  The birds and squirrels get the figs as fast as they turn and nobody cares.  I did get one fig that was ripe but sorry no pic of it.  Will go back next week since there's many green ones.  It had a reddish interior, started off as melon with a peachy finish.  Quite good flavor and surprising.  Wife did not want to try it, saying she would wait for our figs.  I said ok and ate it myself. :)

Easy to see last winter's damage, elm trees and brush grown all up into it...

Many sucker trees inside there as well.

Good luck Charlie. Looks like there are several cuttings that need to be rooted there.

Going to go prune this tree today.

No.  Well, plans have changed and the car is going other places.  Translated: wife needs car lol.

No fig trim today. :(

Fig tree pruning was a success today.  What a mess this tree was in.  Had a 3" diameter elm tree growing right up through the middle.  It was removed, the dead tops were removed and enough cuttings to fill the kitchen sink.

Can pretty much do whatever I want with this tree.  They do not eat them or care about the tree at all.  Only after leaving with my bag full of limbs did I realize there was no pic taken of the after.  Sorry about that but I promise it looks 100% better.  A whole pile of briars was also removed.

PM me if you want some cuttings for shipping.

have fun with those cuttings !!!!!

A provisional name of Charlie's Celeste is hereby given this tree and cuttings until otherwise ID so we can discuss it.  Thanks Bob (rcantor) for the wisdom.

Hmmm.  I don't remember.  Maybe I did because it was where my first real, nearly ripe fig came from.  I did give away Unk Lake Spur cuttings there to a few.

Fine with me if they are, it's a good tasting fig!

Single-node all of it, Charlie- c'mon, you know you want to!

Yes I do want to lol.  Most of the ones set aside have long node spacing and look perfect for it but I will try to keep a few for sticking into 1 gal pots outside next spring. If I had the space though, you can bet I would be packin them single nodes in. :)

Edit: All these cuttings are gone.

I received the cuttings today. And they look great.
Thank you for your generosity. I can't wait to try them.
