Crazy Maryland Weather

Good Afternoon Everyone

As we continue to discuss the best winter protective methods to cover our in-ground fig trees, I have a poor Brown Turkey that as of this past weekend, was still covered with developing and slowly ripening figs.

We bought this Brown Turkey from one of the big box stores (Lowes) this spring and it was in the typical 1 gallon pot.  Quickly planted  into a fairly large container, put it on our deck that recieves a very large amount of sun all summer long, and it grew pretty well.  Even though it was in a large pot compared to the relative size of the tree and root ball, it really drank a lot of water all summer long.

It was a bit late in putting out figs, and a few of these ripened very nicely, and they were quite large and pretty tasty.  As the summer progressed and the high summer temps lowered, this tree did  much better and the smaller figs quickly grew and grew.  However...summer ended, autumn came in and everything s l o w e d down.  I brought this tree into our sun room that receives a large amount of bright light and direct sunlight, and the figs hung on.   Although we had a few that turned a nice color and got very large (inside the sunroom), the taste and flavor just wasn't there.

These last few weeks here in Maryland have been crazy.  We had frost just two or so weeks ago, but since then the temps have raised to close to 70 during the daytime, with night time temps in the high 40s or so.  This week, same thing...highs expected in high 50s.

With all that said, I've decided to move the fig outside a bit to get some cool evenings, and will then move it into the garage at the weekend.  Just too bad all the "nice large figs" appeared toward the end of the season.

Here are a few pictures of this tree taken this past weekend, when temps rose to mid-60s and I put it outside for some fresh air, sun, and cool evening temperatures.

regards to all

Hmmm, wonder what fried green figs would taste like?  Anything like fried green tomatoes?
